Default Michelle Yeoh appreciation thread

Michelle Yeoh, (/ˈjoʊ/ YOH; born 6 August 1962) is a Malaysian actress who rose to fame in 1990s Hong Kong action films and is best known internationally for her roles in the James Bond film Tomorrow Never Dies (1997) and Ang Lee's Academy Award-winning martial arts film Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000) Yeoh is credited as Michelle Khan in her early Hong Kong films.

Born in Ipoh, Perak, Malaysia, Yeoh won the Miss Malaysia pageant of 1983 at the age of 20. She later achieved fame in the early 1990s after starring in a series of Hong Kong action films in which she performed her own stunts, such as Yes, Madam (1985), Police Story 3: Supercop (1992) and Holy Weapon (1993). She was nominated for the BAFTA Award for Best Actress for her work in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.

Yeoh has appeared in many English, Mandarin and Cantonese language films. Her other works include Memoirs of a Geisha (2005), Reign of Assassins (2010), Kung Fu Panda 2 (2011), Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Sword of Destiny (2016), and The Lady (2011), in which she portrayed Aung San Suu Kyi. In 2018, she starred in the American romantic comedy-drama film, Crazy Rich Asians, for which she received a Screen Actors Guild Award nomination as part of its ensemble. She has also co-starred in the 2018 film Master Z: The Ip Man Legacy and the 2019 film Last Christmas. Yeoh was cast as original character Ying Nan in the Marvel Cinematic Universe film Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (2021). She received universal critical acclaim for her leading role in the 2022 science fiction film Everything Everywhere All at Once.

On television, Yeoh is known for her role in the Star Trek franchise as Philippa Georgiou in the Paramount+ series Star Trek: Discovery from 2017 to 2020, and its untitled spin-off series, announced in 2019.

The film review-aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes ranked her the greatest action heroine of all time in 2008. In 1997, she was chosen by People as one of the "50 Most Beautiful People in the World", and in 2009 the same magazine listed her as one of the "35 All-Time Screen Beauties".

Michelle Yeoh says Hollywood questioned ‘If I Even Spoke English’ after 1997 Bond film: ‘I Didn’t Work for Two Years’ due to stereotype offers.

Source: Variety

Quote:
Michelle Yeoh was already a star overseas by 1997 thanks to popular Hong Kong movies like “Police Story 3: Super Cop” and “Supercop 2,” but it wasn’t until the James Bond tentpole “Tomorrow Never Dies” opened that year that Yeoh had her Hollywood breakthrough. The actor played Wai Lin, a Chinese spy who is highly skilled in marital arts and bucks every “damsel in distress” and “Bond girl” stereotype.

“The first movie I did after I came to America was ‘Tomorrow Never Dies’ with Pierce Brosnan,” Yeoh recently told People magazine. “James Bond at that point had only been known as macho, and the girls were just the ones with cutesy names.”

Although Yeoh was praised for her progressive and action-ready Bond girl, she told People that the Hollywood offers that followed were exactly the opposite.

“At that point, people in the industry couldn’t really tell the difference between whether I was Chinese or Japanese or Korean or if I even spoke English,” Yeoh said. “They would talk very loudly and very slow [at me]. I didn’t work for almost two years, until ‘Crouching Tiger,’ simply because I could not agree with the stereotypical roles that were put forward to me.”

Flash forward over 25 years, and Yeoh is an Oscar-nominated actor and a recent Screen Actors Guild Award winner thanks to “Everything Everywhere All at Once.” Coincidentally, Yeoh’ role was originally written for a man and her directors, the Daniels, courted her “Police Story” and “Supercop” co-star Jackie Chan to star. When the role was changed to a woman, Yeoh had some demands regarding the character’s name.

“The only thing I said to them was, ‘The character cannot be called Michelle Wang,’” Yeoh told Variety. “They’re like, ‘But why? It’s so you.’ I’m like, ‘No, I’m not an Asian immigrant mother who’s running a laundromat. She needs her own voice.’ That was the only thing. I’m like, ‘If you don’t change the name, I’m not coming in.’”

The character’s name was ultimately changed to Evelyn Wang, and the rest is history. “Everything Everywhere All at Once” is nominated for a total of 11 Academy Awards, including best picture.

Default Michelle Yeoh becomes the first south-east Asian performer to win best actress

Quote:
Michelle Yeoh has won the Oscar for best actress for superhero comedy Everything Everywhere All at Once at the Academy Awards in Los Angeles.

Born in Malaysia, Yeoh becomes the first person of south-east Asian descent to win the best actress Oscar for her role as laundromat manager Evelyn Wang, who stumbles across a “multiverse” of alternative realities. Yeoh defeated strong competition for the award, including Cate Blanchett for Tár and Michelle Williams for The Fabelmans.

Yeoh has already attracted considerable attention during the awards season for Everything Everywhere All at Once, including a Bafta nomination for best actress, and wins for the Golden Globe for best actress in a film (comedy or musical), and best actress at the Screen Actors Guild awards.

Yeoh dedicated the award to “all the little boys and girls who look like me watching tonight.” She continued: “This is the beacon of hope and possibility. Dreams do come true.

“And ladies: don’t let anybody ever tell you you are past your prime.”

She finished by thanking her mother, 84, who was watching at home in Malaysia, and “all the mums int he world because they are really the superheroes and without them none of us would be here tonight.
