Lord of the Flies Blu-ray

Quote:
"A Remarkable Story. Powerfully Told." -Los Angeles Magazine

With "sharply expressive performances" (Peter Travers, Rolling Stone) by its young cast, this stunning adventure explores the deep, dark corners of the human soul, as a group of adolescent castaways are thrust into an intense world where law and accountability are governed by the rules of survival.

After a harrowing plane crash into the sea, a group of American military cadets finds itself marooned on a deserted island. Realizing the minimal chances of being rescued, the boys band together out of fear and desperation. But as the island paradise becomes their own, competition and power struggles split them into two packs. Ralph (Balthazar Getty) leads one group and preaches civilized ingenuity and togetherness, but Jack (Chris Furrh) wants nothing of it and builds a faction of barbaric hunters who ultimately go to war with Ralph. This powerful shift in conscience transforms ordinary kids into primal killers, setting off a devastating battle of good versus evil and presenting a haunting metaphor for the savage in us all.

So does this version have anything to recommend it compared to the 60s version?

Thumbs up

FINALLY! This was on my "not yet on Blu-ray" wishlist! This news is awesome. So many times I almost paid premium for the out of stock DVD. I'm so glad I waited.

It's in color!
Seriously, not as impactful as the original version and strays a bit from the book, but I still like this version too.

I think I prefer thhis one actually, with the small variances from the book and the contemporary setting, I think the performances of the children was excellent in this especially Jack and Simon.

IIRC, In this version they made the kids young cadets from some sort of military academy instead of regular school children like in the book.
[Show spoiler] It sort of diluted the whole "even regular people revert to their violent nature" message when the kids were already militaristic when they crashed.

It's definitely an interesting companion piece, and one that I wouldn't mind having in my collection if I happened to see it in store for a decent price, but the 60s film beats it on every level.

I have about a dozen Blu-ray titles from Olive Films, and not one of them has subtitles. I buy them only because I am not totally deaf and because the alternative is not to see the films in Blu-ray. For $30 bucks a shot, it seems to me that Olive could afford to include subtitles for the more than 12 million people in the United States and Canada who are deaf or hard of hearing.

Nope. It's like comparing Hitchcock's Psycho to Gus Van Sant's shot by shot remake...not even the addition of color is an improvement, so what's the point? Buy the original.

I greatly prefer it to the 60s version, which I found unwatchable due to the horrible acting. Obviously the 1990 version is nowhere near as good as the book and I'd love a remake, but it's a nostalgic guilty pleasure. It's really dated with some of the references and some of the acting is also bad, but the score and cinematography are fantastic and the story is of course great. The acting is still much better than the 60s version. I'll definitely be buying it.
