Have not heard too much about this one, but it looked interesting. Anyone see it?

I loved it. I love sci-fi. Im sad that it bombed so badly. I guess its back to the wacky characters for Depp.

Yeah, I hate that it got a bad rep because I ended up liking it. It definitely wasn't the best movie of 2014, but it wasn't a complete crapfest either. What people fail to realize is that it's a science fiction movie. It's not supposed to be this movie based on real events or even something that could conceivably happen -- although it wouldn't surprise me if something like that did happen many, many years from now. It didn't disappoint me, mainly because I didn't have extraordinarily high expectations going into it. It was a good movie and it did it's job. It blended a solid storyline with drama and some action and it had you questioning things at the end, especially our future as a society and what it actually means to be "self-aware".
What I believe happened is that this movie was supposed to be one of the biggest hits of 2014 and it was built up as something it was never gonna be. Point is.... I enjoyed it and I will be buying when it hits the street 3-4 months from now. And I'm just hoping that, somewhere around the world, they make a fancy steelbook so I can add it to my collection. ![]() So, to the OP, would I recommend this for your viewing? Yes. Yes I would. It was a solid movie and it has a good all-around cast with Depp, Rebecca Hall, Paul Bettany, Cillian Murphy and Morgan Freeman. I can't say that it's for everybody, but it's a good movie to watch if you're a Sci-Fi fan. Last edited by twardyyy; 05-03-2014 at 09:16 PM. |

Transcendence bombed because it was marketed as a big Summer film and it turned out to be more of a low-key Fall drama - at least that's how it felt to me. I thought it was OK but I would've liked to see more of the aftermath, which I found to be the most interesting aspect of the film. The themes explored in the film were certainly thought-provoking and fascinating but ultimately I thought the film fell short. I'll be passing on the BD unless there's a DC.

You should definitely check it out. I went in totally uninterested in the premise (the trailers looked stupid IMO), but came out loving it. I can't understand how it got a 19% on RottenTomatoes, when a boring gigglefest like RoboCop was more than twice that.
I agree that it feels like a "fall drama." And I have no idea what WB was thinking, spending $100 million on this. Last edited by 2awesome4apossum; 05-07-2014 at 04:06 AM. |

![]() Quote:
$25 million for catering, $25 million for Depp's salary (don't know why), $10 for special effects (mostly green screen rentals) and the rest for marketing. I'm exaggerating of course but after watching a bunch of making of featurettes over the years I'm numb over how much money Hollywood throws away. Take food, for instance. Why do you have to have catering to feed everyone? Everybody gets a paycheck - can't they buy their own food? |

I looked it up, hoping for an interesting explanation on why everyone hated the movie. He wanted an action-adventure robot uprising that follows the storyline of The Terminator. Not sure why, but I definitely agree this story wasn't that.
Don't get me wrong, two of my favorite shows are Battlestar Galactica and Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, so I love a good robot-uprising as much as anyone, but concept dramas can be a heck of a lot of fun if you immerse yourself in the debate. (He was right about Morgan Freeman and Cillian Murphy, though. They really don't have much to do, and seemed to be there in name only.) But if THAT's why everyone hates the movie, I think I finally understand the 19% on Rotten Tomatoes. |
