Default Is it possible that Disney may release Star Wars OT ?

Now that Disney acquired TCF. They also get the rights to the original Star Wars trilogy. This would be 4K gold if they do release it. The OT was brighter than the 97’ re-releases. It would look spectacular!!

Now that Disney is onboard the UHD train, it’s safe to say The Last Jedi will see a 4K release maybe sometime in April or May. Here’s hoping for a big 4K Star Wars collection.

I’m sure it will happen eventually. But my guess is it’s gonna be a long wait.

Anything is possible.

Likely is a different story altogether!

As one of the best lines in Futurama...

http://www.gotfuturama.com/Multimedi.../3ACV20/21.mp3

But seriously, someone in one of the other SW threads had a tweet or a quote from Pablo Hidalgo (I think that's his name) at Lucasfilm that said it wasn't happening due to a contractual thing. I'm sure one of the superfans will be along any time now with the direct quote. Give it time.

(Edit: I assumed you meant the theatrical. Of course Disney will eventually release the whole series on the format, probably once the 9th film is out.)

If Disney releases other of their backlog titles in 4K/UHD then I'll look forward to seeing the Original SW Trilogy in that format. Right now, I think their 4K plans are set to current releases with no eye towards anything in the past at least for now. Since we ARE talking about Disney here, if they DO release any SW movies in 4K, I would guess its a bulk set of the total nine movies, which means a minimum of 2 years.

I expect we'll definitely get George Lucas's preferred versions in 4K, but I imagine it's gonna be a long wait. Disney has been pretty slow to adopt UHD. I think there's a possibility that we'll see The Force Awakens and Rogue One on UHD next year or 2019 to coincide with Episode 9. I can see them releasing the prequels and the original trilogy the year after that. And maybe we'll see the unaltered original theatrical versions of the trilogy in 2027 for the 50th anniversary.

Disney has always had the rights to all the Star Wars properties through the purchase of Lucasfilm. The issue is that Fox has distribution rights to A New Hope so buying Fox they can possibly have distribution rights now.

As for the UHD, Lucasfilm has been hesitant to adopt new formats. Disney gives them automatation to make decisions like Marvel. So its up to Lucasfilm to make the choices for UHD releases.

It took Twentieth Century Fox a really long time just to release their Star Wars movies to blu-ray. This happened before Disney bought Lucasfilm.
TCF in general I think is horrible about releasing older films to new formats.
We’re all still waiting on The Abyss & True Lies to name a few.
Granted Disney isn’t perfect either. They have some titles that were never released on Blu-Ray. Can you imagine IB Tech 20,000 leagues under the sea on 4K?

I’m hoping as a whole, Disney will push content out faster, and hopefully step in where TCF did not.

The delay had nothing to do with Fox. The timeframe was always to Lucasfilm's (George Lucas') desire.

It's going to take a while. I bet they're waiting until 4K players are more mainstream. And in a significant number of households. It doesn't make sense to release it until they know that they can sell a certain number of copies.

I could be wrong here, but regardless of Disney buying Fox, or having the rights to Star Wars now, doesn't Lucas still have ownership stake in the actual original trilogy? I could've sworn I read that, and that he has say as to whether or not those will see the light of day on blu-ray, let alone 4K blu-ray. And, if memory serves me correctly, he likely won't allow those to be released on these formats. Ever.

That's mostly correct, yes. The decision to release the theatrical cuts has always been and always will be on George Lucas, not in any of the studios.

They need to let Lucas make Special Editions out of TFA, Rogue One and TLJ on UHD. Maybe he can fix the humor and at the same time bring back some of that authentic SW magic.

You mean the dreadful dialogue and plot that would fit on the back of a postage stamp?

I would take that anyday over what Disney has done to the franchise now.

With the best will in the world I don't think Disney had the time to teach Mark Hammill how to actually.... you know.... ACT. I've seen better performances from a plank of wood and sadly 40 years have seen no improvement :-(
