I screened the new Sathya Films restoration of BAASHA at Fantastic Fest in Austin last week and it went down a storm. The audience absolutely loved it and clapped and whistled throughout. A few had seen other Indian films I'd programmed, including Krissna's Aalavandhan the previous year, but there were a lot of virgins who had no idea what to expect. I get told by a lot of distributors that Indian films are too risky to license, mostly cult home video specialists, but when I see the bottom of the barrel stuff they often pick up it makes me sad that legitimate watershed films from India have no good home editions.
