Surprises

Spiderman: Homcoming (Not a big Marvel/Comic Book movie guy. Didn't expect anything from this film. Was surprised on how fun and light hearted it was)

Life (Heard nothing but bad things about it, but ended up thinking it was well done. Great visuals and performances)

Disappointments

Rings (The Ring might be one of my all time favorite horror films, and I was just hoping this would be a good sequel/reboot. It was garbage)

47 Meters Down (Didn't expect too much from it, and even with such low expectations, I was let down)

Alien: Covenant (It's an Alien movie, so I assumed it would at least hold a candle to the first, but it was really poorly animated with CGI)

These lists are going to be super super different based upon everyone's personal expectations of each film they see.

I haven't seen most of the big movies released so far because I have to drive to another state to watch them and I can only do that so often. Still...

Surprises:
T2: Trainspotting
John Wick: Chapter 2 (didn't like the first one at all)
Free Fire (I hadn't liked a Ben Wheatley movie since Kill List)

Disappointments:
Dunkirk
Kong: Skull Island
The Great Wall

Best surprises:
Great Wall
Atomic Blonde (from the first trailer my hopes were high, but up until then I had heard nothing about this. Came outta nowhere for me, hence the surprise)

Disappointments:
Pirates of the Caribbean
Alien Covenant
Beauty & the Beast

....though actually I didn't have high hopes for any of those three to begin with

Biggest Surprises:

Get Out
The Space Between Us(saw it last October, but technically it's a 2017 release)

Biggest Disappointments:

Logan(overrated and completely ignores the series continuity)
Spider-Man: Homecoming(major letdown and awful action sequences)

I realize we're only 7 months through 2017, but man, this has been an absolutely dreadful year at the multiplex thus far. I really hope they're saving the best for last.

Vehemently disagree with every statement in this post. But, whatever. It's all opinions.

Really? Wow. Even the trailer for that kinda hurt.

Biggest surprises:
  • The live-action Beauty and the Beast wasn't bad for what it is.
  • Thrillers and chillers! Get Out. Split. The Void. John Wick 2. Dunkirk.
  • Wonder Woman redeeming the DCU.
  • Terminator 2 getting the UHD treatment on top of 3D.
  • Special/collector releases for The Re-Animator, Ronin, Species, Virus, Slither, Stalker, Warlock, Wishmaster, Lawnmower Man, RoboCop 2 and 3, the Pink Panther collection, the Phantasm collection, Brain Damage, and more.
Biggest disappointments:
  • Live-action Ghost in the Shell.
  • No more 3D TVs.
  • The mere fact I did not go to the cinemas to see War for the Planet of the Apes, Atomic Blonde, Kong: Skull Island, Valerian, and others. I'm a slacker.
  • Star Trek Voyager and DS9 won't hit Blu-Ray.

I almost listed The Space Between Us as a disappointment, but I didn't expect anything great to begin with. So it met my expectations. Can't really call it a disappointment if I didn't expect more.

Surprised by Power Rangers. Completely deflated by John Wick 2. If there was a third category situated in the middle of the spectrum I would say GitS would occupy that space.
