Default Will sales from other countries help determine the winner??

I was just thinking about who would win and why and then i thought of the playstation 3. japan barely supports xbox360 but you know they are going to buy ps3 like crazy. so they will buy blu-ray movies and i dont know too much about the people in europe to know what system they want.

so if japan and europe support the ps3 and buy all these blu-ray movies will that have an outcome in the american market

Absolutely not. What sells in one market may not sell in another. Take VCD for instance which was popular in Asia for years but never caught on here. Minidisc is still popular in Japan to my knowledge, yet failed to catch on here. It's quite possible one format will do well here but the other will do well internationally.

What would happen if Blue Ray did well in Europe & Japan and HD-DVD in the states? Would they continue the two formats?

Sure, why wouldn't they? They'd probably stop releasing in areas where the product isn't moving though.

It would be strange though. Could you imagine if Beta had have survived alongside VHS

I think that Japan and China are to huge Markets that will help in desiding this war. We all know were Japan is going to fall, but China is a whole other story.

China will probably do something else with red lasers.

It is interesting that BD will hit the UK before HD DVD. What has Toshiba been doing all this time?

Come to think of it, I guess my earlier answer was a bit too fast and simplistic and I can offer one obvious example:

Xbox 360.

The Xbox platform has been, and continues to be, dead in the East since day one.

Many people, including myself, have said that MS ought to just pull out of the East and forget about it. Maybe they will some day, who knows?

But the 360 is a very successful console even at that. Certainly they would be way more successful if they were doing well in the East.

The gist of my earlier post was: No one is unimportant.

Also: If either one of these new optical formats wants to outright succeed and replace DVD some day...they need to have worldwide success.
