Disney Luca (2021) [No 3D Blu-ray] [Digital only - AVP]

This Disney / Pixar film went straight to Disney+.

According to the end credits, there is a Stereoscopic 3D version of this film.

I'm not confident that this is going to get a 3D release, but I definitely have my fingers crossed.

It should be released somewhere on 3D Blu-ray. Otherwise, what was the point in Disney producing it in 3D?

Their CG is getting so sophisticated that there are scenes that are truly 3D.

Hoping RSM can turn the whole situation around and release this and other unreleased 3D films from last year on 3D Blu-ray. After all, Disney is one of their distribution partners.

A theatrical 3D release, like other Disney theatrical 3D that they haven’t been releasing on 3D Blu-ray, until COVID interrupted that plan.

But yeah, I’m hoping that in the ramp-up of a post-pandemic reality, perhaps we could at least start getting some UK releases again.

Distribution partner does not mean they will license the title for them to release, Disney releases their own stuff. Chances 0 for that unless Disney themselves start releasing 3d blus again (not holding my breath).

We might still get a 3D release. It was only on Disney+ I believe in North American market, but I believe internationally it was to get some theatrical release. So I shall keep my fingers crossed and hope for the best. Still can’t go to a theatre, at least in Ontario

Not trying to be a party pooper here but Mulan, Soul and Raya all skipped 3D BD releases. Mulan was a tentpole release for the studio. Hope springs eternal but at this point a Luca laserdisc release seems about as likely as a 3D BD.

Probably my least liked Pixar movie but I still would have watched in 3D. What the heck, why are they still converting these? Mulan and Raya and I can understand, but they had to know by the time of this conversion that they were going to just throw it on D+.

Because the decision to create a stereoscopic 3D version was likely made before it became standard practice to premiere films on Disney+. Also, it is easier and more cost-effective to make a 3D version during the film's production, before the original team is disbanded. Or perhaps they just want to have a 3D version in the vault in case Avatar 2 revives 3D cinema.

Wife and I *really* enjoyed this flick. Will get "flat" if I have to--and with Disney, it's looking like it--but would love this in 3D. The underwater scenes would be great.

Future proofing. Sooner or later autostereoscopic displays will be ready for the mass-market.

Disney made their first colour films in the 1930s, and were making most of their content in colour long before it became the norm, including much of their TV content well before colour TV became established. Once that happened, B/W content became significantly devalued in terms of the audience it could hope to attract.

For animated movies 3D is just part of the production pipeline. Those credits are just 6 names out of hundreds of people that worked on this movie. Unlike live-action 3-D conversions, this doesn't require an army of rotoscopers tediously separating out every element on every level in every shot. They just have to set up a second virtual camera in each scene to render a second eye-view. They are probably rendering depth maps anyway.

Would it really be future proofing? It seems more likely to me that they just weren’t sure if cinemas would be open by the time it finished. In fact, according to Wikipedia it was set to be released exclusively in cinemas in June but then that plan was cancelled by March. I’m guessing they started work on the 3D version before they made that decision.

No, as Interdimensional says, it's a simple process just to create another eye view. Pixar have all the resources they need - even if there was no 3D release whatsoever they'd still produce a 3D version just for their own viewing pleasure. As they've done with A Bug's Life, WALL-E and The Incredibles.

Amazon DE preorders are up. They’re doing the same infuriating shit like with Raya where the special edition says ‘2D Blu-ray’ on the cover. It’s like they’re acknowledging there’s a huge market for 3D Blu-ray in Germany, and saying ‘we just don’t want to give it to them’.

Seeing this "2D Blu-ray" 3D print mockering, we should all already know what will happen with the Black Widow 3D Blu-ray

It`s truly a shame what Disney/PIXAR does here (!!!)

Seems they like to rub salt into our wounds

Interesting. They're really hammering home the anti-3D stance.
Disney doesn't just not support a video format if they dislike it, they actively undermine it.
