![]() "Happy End" (France, Germany, Austria 2017) written and directed by Michael Haneke ![]() http://www.imdb.com/title/tt5304464 Director: Michael Haneke (The White Ribbon, Amour, Funny Games, Caché) Cast: Jean-Louis Trintignant, Isabelle Huppert, Franz Rogowski, Fantine Harduin, Mathieu Kassovitz, Laura Verlinden, Toby Jones Really enjoyed Hanekes new movie since his last effort "Amour" (2012). It features a great cast with the 86 years old Jean-Louis Trintignant, who once again shows why he is one of the best in his craft and a promising performance by newcomer Fantine Harduin (12). The story evolves around the morally depraved Laurent family in the summer of 2016 in the northern french port city of Calais when the refugee crisis was at its height. What I like about Hanekes directing is his confidence in the intelligence of the viewer. He opens up the opportunity to connect backgrounds and leaps in the story all by ourselves. There are moments of pure awkwardness due to the actions of the family members and moments when my laughter stuck in my throat. Christian Bergers cinematography underlines elegantly the overall tone of the movie: well executed long tracking shots, the mix of intimidating close ups and observing wide shots. The most interesting character is played by german actor Franz Rogowski (Love Steaks, Victoria) who at the same time literally performs one of the most memorable scenes in 2017! If you want to watch the movie anytime soon make sure to avoid the official trailer because it shows way too much. The linked clip is perfect to get a first impression. 8/10 |
