AMAZING, sadly-obscure masterwork. So happy to see Criterion put out this new 4K restoration, which ought to help raise its profile here in the US considerably. (UK label Second Run issued a solid, but unspectacular region-free disc a few years back.)

I hope people don't make the mistake of overlooking this title in Criterion's latest round of announcements. Really a fantastic and dark, morbid, yet humorous work that also has a very serious message. I would put it at or near the very top of the Czech New Wave.

Best Criterion announcement in a while, but it already has a blu release so I'd prefer Beauty and The Beast, which is arguably superior to Cocteau's.

FWIW, the Second Run is not from the 4k restoration Criterion is releasing.

So finally the much awaited 4K restoration of The Cremator is coming out. Terrific movie, which I first discovered on Second Run's DVD, along with Intimate Lighting (wonder if Criterion will release that as well, because this site review had some issues with the SR BD transfer) and Diamonds of the Night.

Very excited for this one. It's been on my radar for a long time. Will definitely pick it up.

An absolutely amazing film, but as others have noted there's already a very solid all-region blu-ray from Second Run in the UK -- with, imo, significantly better bonus features than what's planned for the upcoming Criterion (notably a great Kat Ellinger commentary and an equally fascinating Projection Booth podcast/alternate soundtrack/commentary). It's a bit disappointing that Criterion isn't prioritizing releasing films that aren't already available in beautifully produced editions.

I had no idea about the Second Run release. I'm not very good with keeping up with all the international releases. I might actually just pick that up along with a lot of other great titles Second Run has released. Thanks all who have mentioned it and putting them on my radar.

FYI, there is a German Blu-ray with an acceptable (though relatively dirty and restoration-worthy) transfer:
https://amazon.de/Morgiana-Meisterwe.../dp/B07QN8P27C
Includes English subtitles.

It would be nice to have, but my gut is telling me that criterion will get a hold of this one day.........I hope!

We'd be willing to re-do this for Criterion if they wanted to actually have a commentary track for the movie...

It doesn't have the new 4k transfer though. There's also considerably more on the Criterion, so I'm not sure where your criticism of the bonus features comes from. The SR has a Quay Brothers' intro, a podcast, and a commentary as its only exclusives. Criterion has the short film and more.

I finally picked this up and watched it and it was exactly as insane and amazing as I thought it'd be!! So glad the B&N Criterion sale happened.
