Has anyone got this? Any review on the quality?
![]() http://www.amazon.co.jp/gp/product/B00DHD9J68/ref=s9_simh_gw_p74_d0_i1?pf_rd_m=AN1VRQENFRJN5&pf_ rd_s=center-2&pf_rd_r=166XEQKK6XQW32NN5R4M&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p =463376756&pf_rd_i=489986 here's a google translated review, but can't understand much: Only a brief introduction of the work jacket without any and liner notes. Illustrations that were used in the DVD cover art is printed on the jacket inside the entire surface. Audio and stereo audio mono original. Much commentary of staff supervision and colleagues where you want. It is on a comparison of the LD but the image quality has a high resolution of HD seems to be confirmed small detail description. However, it is not the feeling that cel is moving focus is not match the chattering. Dust and cell scratches, and slightly also because it is a screen full-length dark tone is followed so that the look, but do not mind so much. Promo video of the privilege in the thing using the illustration of Mr. Amano things I've never heard the soundtrack and the main part music that is being used. Just not enough in the merchandise and was turned into BD simply. Last edited by filmmusic; 09-12-2013 at 04:55 PM. |

I picked it up. Many people find it too slow, but Tenshi no tamago has long been one of my favorite films. That review seems pretty accurate. Scratches and speckles are visible on the print. The film appears to have been transferred to Blu-ray without any kind of restoration or digital tinkering. To me it looks the way I might imagine a nice film print would look.

I do. Like the Japanese reviewer below, I have only the Laserdisc version to compare it to, so it already looks better than the previous copy I own

Oh, thank you very much.
I hoped for more exceptional results and restoration that would make the film look gorgeous. So, from what you both say I gather it has a mediocre quality for Bluray.. Could I ask for a couple of screenshots please if anyone can do that? Last edited by filmmusic; 09-13-2013 at 08:08 AM. |

I could post some shots from both versions but I don't seem to be able to post links or pics, is that because i'm still classified as a new member?

The PQ is certainly not mediocre.
The film was cleaned but not digitally remastered. How could it have been? Tenshi no Tamago is an early and largely overlooked masterpiece from Oshii. The production was obviously made on a tight budget. The BD print is in rather good shape, with minimal wobbling effect and some speckles which you tend to ignore after a while. I own the Laserdisc and the DVD, and the BD is definitely sharper. The majority of the film taking place at night, the shadows reveal a surprising amount of details, and I didn't spot any macroblocking or banding. A very small staff was dedicated to the Blu-ray authoring (whose names you can read after the credits), and I suspect the restoration budget was next to non-existant. Considering the DVD never made it outside of Japan, it's a miracle that it was even released on BD in such a decent form. If you expected a Ghibli or Disney-style presentation, then you were misleading yourself. |

Personally I think it should be viewed first with an understanding of what is said, subsequent viewings on blu-ray without the subs would then be fair game. |

I ordered this along with some other stuff on Amazon JP a couple of days ago. I ordered it a long with Princess Mononoke, which is a preorder, so I'll have to wait a couple more weeks.
It's actually a blind buy for me (an expensive one, I know), but the artistry displayed was enough for me to take the chance. Hope I like it! |

Like others have said, the film is a masterpiece, with an INCREDIBLE score, and the transfer on the Blu-ray is gorgeous. |

So, I watched this for the first time.
The PQ seemed pretty good to me. Sure, there are some speckles here and there, but it's crisp and really enhances the visuals. As for the film itself, I'm not sure what to make of it at this point. Like, I think I have some ideas of what it's about, but on the other hand, I'm like, what just happened there...? lol. It'll definitely require a few more viewings. It was a little more abstract than I expected, and while I'm more of a fan of the conventional narrative (I know most people are), I definitely found it intriguing. In terms of the more superficial aspects... This is an absolutely gorgeous film. The visuals and the use of sound/music is quite something. The backgrounds are lovely, and seeing Amano's illustrations come to life through animation is really something. I'm imagining the budget wasn't very big on this film, and so the animation itself seemed pretty limited throughout, but the scenes where movement was required were very well animated and dynamic. And since the artistry on display was so glorious, I wasn't at all bothered by the more static scenes. It is pure visual beauty from start to finish. |

I think the movie is mainly about faith. The girl has faith that her egg is going to hatch and the man needs proof ("you have to break an egg to find out what's inside"). In the end, he shatters the egg and it is revealed to be empty.
Then you have the people who constantly try to catch the fish that may not exist. In the movie's version of the story of Noah's ark, when Noah sent a bird to find out if the flood waters had abated, the bird never returned. They waited and waited until they forgot there even was a bird. The bird is a symbol of hope. It's still there, still sleeping and dreaming, but it has been forgotten. It's waiting for someone to believe in it again. After the girl drowns, more eggs surface, and she reappears as an angel on board the ship in the sky. |

The film takes on a whole new dimension when you learn that Oshii was in training to become a Christian priest, but lost his faith before production on Angel's Egg began. It's obviously a very personal film for him, and he apparently does not talk about the meaning of it or symbolism in interviews.
