Warner Bros 2001: A Space Odyssey - 50th Anniversary 4K/Blu-Ray/Digital HD & Blu-ray Only

For those wanting a confirmation, here it is. This is a confirmed release as evidenced by Warner Bros Germany. It will be released on May 24, 2018 in Germany. The US release date has not been published yet, but it should be around the same time.

What is unknown is whether the standalone Blu-ray will be an upgrade. It's unlikely there will be any additional features added; the British Film Classification Board has not rated any new features yet.

Wish it would at least have reversible original artwork. Or a super fancy steel of the original artwork. That would be gorgeous.

An important film that I'm hoping won't receive a "throwaway" release. I have that artwork on a steelbook I imported from the UK in mid-2017 so I'm already

Preferably tucked away in an oversized Monolith package...

I just hope the BD gets a new transfer. (Despite having a 4k TV, I'm not buying 4k discs)

I am glad to hear this news and assume it will be the last time I buy it. 2001 was the first movie I bought, having purchased the VHS version in 1980 for $65.

It's probably a mistake. The artwork (which is almost identical to the regular French Blu-ray) doesn't hint at anything big as an extra.

I don't believe that art is authentic. Regardless, the description on Amazon France says the third disc is a DVD, which doesn't make sense either.

Further down below the description says 4k UHD, blu-ray and dvd. So, a 3 disc set would make sense then.

Description du produit
Contient :
- l'Ultra HD Blu-ray 4K du film (en HDR)
- le Blu-ray du film
- le DVD du film

But, what has me worried are the extras. Translated from google translate:

Blu-ray:
Audio commentary by Keir Dullea and Gary Lockwood
"Behind the scenes of a myth" (2001 - Channel Four - 60 ')
4 documentaries:
- "Odyssey in space: Stanley Kubrick's legacy" (22 ')
- "Vision of a future past: the prophecy of 2001" (22 ')
- "2001: A Space Odyssey - A look at the future" (1960 - 23 ')
- "What is there beyond?" (20 ')
"2001: special effects and graphic design" (10 ')
"Look: Stanley Kubrick!" (3 ')
Interview of Stanley Kubrick by Jeremy Bernstein in 1966 (audio)

SO, we either get the old master with pretty much the same extras or a new master with pretty much the same extras. Sadly!

Who knows if it's correct but it actually mentions the 4th disc as being a DVD of extras:

- le Blu-ray du film
- le DVD du film
- un DVD de bonus

frankly I would be very suprised if the standard BR would be a upgrade, the current disc is still pretty good

It‘s not bad for the time when it as released but there is plenty of room for improvement, especially when watched on a large display like a projector. I very much hope the BR will be taken from the new4K Master as I can’t afford to upgrade my setup to 4K for some time to come.

While the pic suggests one was under consideration, there's no indication the standard blu in the standalone case will come to pass; only the UHD is listed in pre-orders so far.

As for that: Apart from 'Unforgiven,' can anyone turn up a Warner Bros. UHD of a catalog title that contains a re-mastered blu-ray?

Blade Runner's UHD was a repackaging of the existing 1080p, though the UHD was apparently produced from the 4K master originally used to produce the blu-ray. Warner probably deemed that re-encoding the blu wouldn't be worth the incremental gains. Still, not optimistic they'll bother revisiting the merely HD 2001 at this point in the physical media game.
