Default Dolby Atmos ceiling speakers

Hello,

I just bought some Polk Audio OWM3 to use at ceiling speakers for a Dolby Atmos set up. Im wondering if it would be better to mount them on the front speakers and have the sound "bounce" or if it would be best to mount them above the listening area. My only concern about mounting them about the listening area is the wire management. I dont have much real estate in the attic to run wires up there, so i would have to have the wires exposed on the ceiling. So im wondering your thoughts and looking for tips on either hiding the wires somehow vs. placing them as top firing speakers against the ceiling.

Thanks!

I would recommend ceiling mounted if possible. I can't speak for your wire runs since we can't see your setup, but if you have a professional installer look at it, I'm sure they can do it. One thing to keep an eye out is the direction of the grade beams above. Depending which way they run over your living room, you might have to cut several holes in the ceiling in order to drill through the beams and run the cables through them.

If it becomes too much hassle or messy sounding, just go with the speaker mounted types. I have never heard them in person, so I don't know if they work as good as ceiling mounted speakers.

It's certainly worth experimenting on which results you prefer, the 'bounce' gives you extra distance and in theory can give more immersive results. So if you have the chance try both methods/speakers.

I would stick with the ceiling mount. Somebody here ran the experiments and says the difference is huge. Ceiling is the way to go.

I posted some pictures of my ceiling mounted OM3's on this thread. (I lost the pic so I can't repost them) The work very well.

Towards the bottom of the post you'll see my pics. At first they looked out of whack, but once you get used to them they are just part of my HT ceiling.

If you can't ceiling-mount them, then install them as height speakers at the top of the wall.

Using them as reflecting speakers would be a step back, IMO. Especially considering these speakers aren't designed for that function, making it even worse; you might as well look as Atmos-enabled modules if you want reflecting speakers.

I`m building Atmos theater and it`s going to have only one pair of Atmos-speakers in the ceiling. My ceiling is 2,40m/7feet and 10.49"( is that the right way to say).
Could I use just some bookshelf-speakers or does Atmos-speakers sound better? Will the Atmos-speakers have wider "angle" so it doesn`t sound too pinpoint? I was thinking Onkyo SKH-410. They are cheap but are they any good?

You can use bookshelf speakers or any kind of speakers, but how can a person mount them on the ceiling? and beside bookshelf speakers are way too bulky in size to mount on the ceiling, and the speaker wires are going to be showing. If it's possible, just get a nice pair of in-ceiling speakers. Dolby Atmos is only a matrix height channel, that's used for periodic, overhead sound effects, and the majority of the audio is still going to be outputted from the main, center and surround channels, not the Dolby Atmos height channel.

I thought to use corner brackets to mount them.
And yeah, bookshelf speakers aren`t the most beautiful sight but in-ceiling speakers are not possible so I`ll just have to find speakers that are slim and white

How a pair of these. The speaker wires will still show, unless you run the wires inside the ceiling and sidewalls.

I already have my 7 piece timbre matched set, but I am looking at one of these for a .2 in Dolby Atmos. Probably the flat pair listed, on the 2nd link. Any member in here use these? How do they sound? I want to try and mount it without cutting holes do to the fact I will eventually move the HT room to the basement.

Correct me if I am wrong. Since these are height speakers, ideally a 1-way speaker should be the best? This is a 2-way speaker. So, my question is that the 3-way speakers is overkill and a waste of money? I want great Atmos sound, but at a cheap price and these seem to fit the bill. The reviews sound good as well, for what I want to use them as.

I've tried loading links from Monoprice before, and I received the same errors. I think there is something wrong with the insert link as you've stated. Links from other sites doesn't have any problems.

I can't speak for the two you've listed above, but I have Black Back Ceiling Speakers 8-inch 2-Way Fiber with Covered Crossover (pair) product 15699 and they are awesome for Atmos. I've only had them for a few weeks, but they blend in nicely with my Klipsch set up and they've been a welcome addition to my home theater.
