Default Relic (2020) Scream Factory Blu-ray (11/17)

Quote:
we are proud to announce that we have a new (and currently buzz worthy) ifc midnight title planned for release on blu-ray & dvd on november 17th!

Relic – when elderly mother edna inexplicably vanishes, her daughter kay and granddaughter sam rush to the family's decaying country home, finding clues of her increasing dementia scattered around the house in her absence. After edna returns just as mysteriously as she disappeared, kay's concern that her mother seems unwilling or unable to say where she's been clashes with sam's unabashed enthusiasm to have her grandma back. As edna's behavior turns increasingly volatile, both begin to sense that an insidious presence in the house might be taking control of her.

"enigmatic, mournful, deeply creepy ..." — jessica kiang, variety

"exerts an ever-tightening hold on the imagination" — david rooney, the hollywood reporter

emily mortimer, robyn nevin, and bella heathcote star in an unforgettable new spin on the haunted house movie from first-time writer/director natalie erika james: Relic.

Terrible cover for an exceptional horror film. Either way though, its a day one purchase for me.

Thought this was The Relic with Tom Sizemore for a moment.

A Scream! Factory edition of that would be most welcome.

As long as Scream! includes the 7.1 mix from the prior Blu along with the standard 5.1 and stereo.

Haven't gotten around to the 2020 "Relic" yet but I keep hearing great things about it.

I keep thinking the same thing even with the year change.

This film has a pretty eerie, palpable atmosphere, and keeps some decent tension and uncertainty going for a good bit of the film, simmering on a low boil. The grandmother is seriously creepy, and did a solid job in her role. I didn't get to finish watching it to the end yet, to see if there's any real payoff, but the first 70% of it has a similar vibe to The Taking of Deborah Logan, albeit more vague and less radical as to the source and nature of the disturbing happenings.....

Probably would’ve been for me, too, but after some recent strong-buzz turds like THE LODGE and MANDY, I’m going to have to rent it first.

I would say definitely rent it first. After all the build-up, I was a little disappointed, to be honest. That being said, it did affect me emotionally, and I think it might grow on me with repeated viewings. Some of my favorite movies got a meh reaction first time around, so I'm hopeful for this one. But I still wouldn't recommend a blind buy.

When straight to streaming in it's home country (Australia). I haven't gotten around to watching yet.

I forgot to ad that in Australia they have been advertising this on public transport (at least where I live - on buses).

At first I thought it was some new streaming series and then it clicked that it was a cinema feature that had been shown at Sundance.

Having just watched this on Streaming my advice is to rent before blind-buying.

I saw this last week. It was okay. At one point it's less horror and all symbolism.

Finally got around to watching Relic, I liked this, it was definitely very slow and disturbing. And yeah, it's literally all symbolism to a point but it's done in a very creepy way.
[Show spoiler]Even the house had dementia.

I thought this was a chore to get through. Initially promising, but yet another artsy-fartsy "horror" movie that's more intent being metaphorical than scary.

Really loved this one. Any chance we will get any extras or a better transfer? According to the review on the site here, looks like the video compression isn't so great. Would owning a 4K Digital version (if it even exists) be superior to the BD barebones?

The UK release wasn't any better. I'm curious if the recently announced Umbrella release will be any better or more of the same.
