I'm gonna take a chance and start a thread with a question I've been wondering about for the last few months or so reading through this forum.
We're starting to get a decent amount of of UHD movies. It's still early and many of us are hopeful for the studios to go back and put out their good catalog releases. People like what they like and at times I myself wonder, why someone would by this movie or that. Of course, it's all about personal taste. What I've noticed here is that some folks will admit the movie is just terrible or they didn't like it, but will still buy it nonetheless. The Dark Tower thread is a prime example. So, where are you? Do you buy a movie because you like it, do you buy it because of the format regardless of whether you like the movie or not or to fill your shelves with all the 4K that gets released? Or is it about PQ & AQ alone no matter if you think the movie will suck? To answer my own question, I buy movies I know I'll watch more than once. It might be two, three or four years in between viewings, but I know I'll pull it out eventually. The other reason is if there is a strong consensus about how good a movie is in addition to good PQ. I've done that based on reactions I've read. |

I buy movies I like, first and foremost. I am not gonna buy a movie that sucks (unless it's a sucky movie I like) just because it looks and sounds great. I might rent one, but I am not going to add it to my collection.
To answer your question, I buy UHDs because I want my movies in the highest quality possible, and because I have a 4k TV and UHD BD player (even though I bought a few before I had said player, which is an Xbox One S, because I knew I owuld get one eventually, and every UHD comes with a standard BD anyway). |

There are a few that I have blind bought (Crouching Tiger, Blade Runner) that receive great reviews all around so I feel they are safe blind buys. I'm on the fence whether or not to blind buy Fifth Element. |

I buy movies I will watch more than once, because I really like the movie or because HDR and WCG make the visuals worth watching again.

I want a film to look it’s very best and I also want to fulfill my childhood dream of owning every movie ever so on the off chance that 10 years down the line I’ll think “I really want to watch Salt right now. I’d like to experience it the way it was in theaters” and actually be able to get pretty close to that. Sounds dumb out loud but that’s it. It’s why I buy some titles that I don’t watch often. Cause I get weird movie cravings at weird times and I like being able to scratch those itches quickly.

I just want to continue to show my support for physical media which I prefer (for many reasons) over streaming.
Edit: I also try to only buy movies I enjoy but sometimes a good deal can be tough for me to pass up which has led me to having one too many guilty pleasures in my collection. Last edited by vincentric; 09-22-2017 at 02:41 AM. |

I already own every movie I love on 1080 blu ray. I buy 4k for the absolute best movies I love and can imagine/see a tangible upgrade in. I have blade runner, and will absolutely buy gladiator, saving private ryan, inception, braveheart......long story short its gonna have to be a special movie for me to upgrade

I have that dream, but alas, poor budget. LOL I do have a few movies I've only watched once, but I won't get rid of them. I just know I'll watch it again. |

Once you Beta Testers get the kinks worked out I will by my TV and player. If I die before then, I am certain I will not be fretting about the dollars I spent on 4K Ultra Blu-ray discs.

Almost all my new theatrical movie purchases are blind buys, since I only see a handful at the theater a year and they are all kids movies that I see with my granddaughter (I buy most of them later).
So I depend a lot on reviews (UHD PQ impressions among fellow members and a few trusted reviewers, and consensus movie scores like IMDb and Rotten Tomatoes) and whether it's a type of movie I want to see. Also depends on price and packaging. Been getting into the Best Buy steelbooks lately so I'll pay a little more for those because I know they are limited. Otherwise I'll just wait for the price to drop if I don't need to see it as soon as it comes out. For catalog I just pick and choose my favorites, and knowing that the PQ is a big step up has a huge influence on my buying decision. Fortunately most of the catalogs released so far have been worthy upgrades. But basically I'm just pleased as punch how good the format looks and I want to show my support for it and for the future of physical media. So when in doubt, I'll just buy the movie. |

Initially when I got my 4K setup I was buying up everything I could off eBay in lots or off here just to get it. I quickly realized I was going to spend tons of money on movies I wasn't necessarily interested in. I then decided to just purchase 4K discs of films I had seen and loved, highly anticipated films I had somehow missed in theaters (that I would buy day 1 on bluray anyway), or wait for the review/opinions on disc image quality and sound. This has started to save me money as well as build a 4K catalogue that I will actually rewatch and continue to enjoy as opposed to just continue to build a collection I may or may not watch. My problem is I still have a ton of blurays I need to watch still and didn't want to keep adding to that pile.

I might blind buy a movie if the PQ/AQ have good ratings and if I feel like the movie might be enjoyable. However, I will not blind buy a movie if I'm pretty sure it's going to disappoint me, regardless of the PQ and AQ. The latest Transformers movie is a perfect example.
I also don't mind re-purchasing my favourite movies on each successive format, as it's great to experience a movie I really enjoy with the upgraded image and in some cases, audio (atmos). A good example are movies like The Dark Knight Trilogy, Interstellar, and Tron: Legacy, which already look very good on bluray, are going to be day-1 pre-orders/buys. Overall, though, I buy physical media because of the higher quality image and audio. |

I buy movies that I know I'll like due to having already seen them or movies that I think I'll like based on their genre, critical reception, and trailers/ clips. As for why I buy them in UHD, it's because the format offers the best picture quality.
