is this the level of criterion now? to release any old thing that netflix makes?

i watched this "documentary". it was fine. tongue in cheek at times, but there were some neat performances. but is it worth preserving in the criterion collection?

if criterion is going to become a 'catch-all basin' for all the netflix-produced movies then netflix needs to step it up with their quality. a netflix N on the poster logo when you're searching through titles doesn't always mean it will be good.

All the interview segments are "mockumentary" and satirical in THE ROLLING THUNDER
REVUE: A BOB DYLAN STORY.

The "mockumentary" interviews place the the concert footage and backstage business --
which are authentic and worthy of Criterion standards -- into a false context.

I think poorly of Martin Scorsese for indulging in a practice that disrespects the history,
the music and the fans. It's an insult, actually, put across with the cooperation of Dylan's
management.

Scorsese's previous documentary about Dylan, the epic NO DIRECTION HOME, is a
masterful music history and straightforward documentary from the director. It tells
an amazing story and the concert footage is spectacular. That should have been a
Criterion blu-ray.

Personally, this Dylan fan found this to be considerably more than "any old thing," or "neat." And I get that many were miffed by the liberties Dylan (who seemed all in on this) & Scorsese took with some of the storytelling - it isn't a true documentary. Regardless, I found it playful, entertaining, and completely Dylanesque. I quickly realized what I was watching and enjoyed the ride. I want to own it and watch it again & again. The performances along with the backstage & tour footage alone would warrant a Criterion edition. I'll be overjoyed if this indeed is how it gets released. The prospect of extras has my mouth watering. And incidentally, I'd love to see No Direction Home get the same.

One of the biggest concerns with Netflix originals for me (and I'm sure many of us here) is that they don't often get physical disc releases. So I'm fine if Criterion has made a deal to release some of their more critically acclaimed efforts. And this one happens to fit with Criterion's interests. They've released the Bob Dylan documentary "Don't Look Back" as well as "Festival" which features Dylan, in addition to other music docs such as "Monterey Pop" and "Gimme Shelter". They also seem to be upping their Scorsese game with the release of his short films and "The Irishman".

Yeah, I dug this and I'm happy I'll be able to add this to my Blu-ray collection next to "No Direction Home", "Don't Look Back" and the 30th Anniversary Concert. I'm also a Criterion guy so I don't mind.

That one scene of Dylan and Baez talking about their history together is incredible, filled with that sort of wistful longing and regret that feels like something out of a scripted drama.

What century is Scorsese's SCTV documentary that he's been working on for years coming out?

I don't mind what they did with this all that muc. It feels in the spirit of the tour and Dylan's almost anarchic, trolling with the press. In actuality, it's only 4 short stories which are fictional.

Calm down. Criterion will continue to release their normal slate of films that no more than twelve people have seen.

You mean more than the throwaway unnecessary stuff like Wes Anderson, Frances Ha, Armageddon, The Rock, Chasing Amy, Tiny Furniture, etc?

There are way worse things in thy hallowed collection than this.

A Martin Scorsese directed music film with a 92% RT score? If so, then that's great news. Please don't mistake your opinion for that of everyone else. This is clearly a critically praised film, from one of the greatest directors of all time. Don't act like Criterion are just picking up some random film as if the reasons I mentioned in the first sentence aren't reason enough.

In a world where more and more of our best film-makers are working for Netflix, I'm thrilled that Criterion will make many of these films available watch in the best possible quality, and to own copies of regardless of how Netflix might change it's business or streaming model down the line (I've 'bought' films to 'own' to stream on Amazon that then went away).

Whether or not you love this particular film, it's a Martin Scorsese film, so yeah, I'm very happy. And hoping that Criterion will continue to put out any film by a world-class director we might not have access to otherwise - Scorsese, Coen Brothers, Cuaron, etc.

There are film-makers who have earned having their whole body of work considered valuable and worthy of preservation and availability. I'd certainly put Scorsese in that category.

I’d like to see this expanded to a Box Set that pulls entire concerts from the tour. Surely there is a TON of footage sitting in storage for Rolling Thunder Revue. The Scorsese documentary “mockumentary” is pretty pointless. It’s not Spinal Tap or one of Christopher Guest’s films which are playful and fun. Feel free to slap it on a set of these unreleased concert films as an extra, but I think many won’t be inclined to own the Scorsese piece as it treated the audience like chumps. My two cents.

An exceptional addition to the Scorsese ouvre, and one I was worried I'd never get to own a Blu of - very happy to be proven wrong, assuming it gets a Criterion UK release.

Will happily grab this and The Irishman, and can't wait to see what they're doing for special features on both.

The fact that I chose to watch it a second time last night told me I'd like to own the physical BD when released too.
Already a very big fan of Blood On The Tracks and that I just recently bought a copy of Desire made the second viewing even more enjoyable.

Check this out:

A Guide to What's Fake in The Rolling Thunder Revue: A Bob Dylan Story

I'm so glad Rolling Stone Magazine sorted this out.

A pity they don't go into more detail about all the fake s___ in the film.

The Dylan org's statement at the end is spin control

If it would be a boxset, I hope that it'll include Renaldo and Clara. I've always been curious to see (but not curious enough to see an 8th generation VHS copy) of it.

I loved the documentary, I see it as Dylan wanting to make sure there isn't a Gospel to his legacy.

Also, Bob Dylan has always had a sense of humor. I do t know why people are surprised. They should be more surprised when he is genuine and candid.
