I'm really eager to see this. I typically enjoy Assayas's films, and the trailer for this also reminded me of the lovely Horror-Drama from a few years back, The Eclipse.

I'm excited to see Kristen Stewart taking on more mature roles like this, and the new Woody Allen project. I've always been fond of her, and its nice to see her push herself as a performer. I'll try and watch this eventually just to see her.

Thanks for the tip, JWFORD.

Kinda shocked she didn't get best actress, but film looks interesting regardless. Clouds of Sils Maria is something I should probably seek out, but it doesn't seem like something that would interest me.

Do you like films? Do you like great acting? A story that forces you, the viewer, to use their head?

If not, don't watch.

This got the kind of love it or hate it response at Cannes that makes it irresistible.
As I love a psychological drama and understated ghost story, and find Kristen Stewart far more engaging as an actress when she isn't in a Hollywood blockbuster, this is must-viewing for me.

I liked this one a lot.

My Review.

Quote:
I love how both of the lead actors from Twilight have completely tarnished their teeny reputation over the last few years. I knew Kristen Stewart was a good actress because of her role as Joan Jett in The Runaways, but she still continues to impress me. She follows up her brilliant performance in Clouds of Sils Maria with another admirable effort - Personal Shopper is a success for both Stewart and her director Oliver Assayas, as they turn what looks like a simple ghost story into a true tour de force (though not everyone will be happy - my friend was checking his watch every two minutes).

The way grief is portrayed in this film is simply sublime, and the film only falters from a certain macabre plot point that feels more random than logical. Also featuring one of the most accurate portrayals of what it feels like to have a conversation with a girl through texting (her answers will always be 90% shorter than yours, with most of them being just "yes", "ok" or "no"), Personal Shopper is simply put, one of the most interesting films I've seen in cinemas this year. The production design is ravishing too, setting this story in the Parisian fashion underworld not only adds to the plot and undertones of the film, but offers the film a distinct look as well.

Cannes boos nearly everything, they can't be taken seriously as any sort of litmus test good or bad.

It *was* warmly received overall in TIFF though. But was considered a modest movie from what I gather.

The movie was received with both boo's and applause, I was indicating that a movie that prompts such divisive response is usually worth seeking out (at least for me).

A movie met with almost universal derision (whether at Cannes or elsewhere) does indeed usually prove to be terrible...and I don't doubt Sean Penn's The Last Face is exactly that.

Assayas is an interesting enough filmmaker that I'd see this anyway.

So good! Stewart gets better in every new film she is in, I think.

I was at the screening with a Q+A with Assayas at the end and he was really very articulate about his motivations that for me it cleared up the film's ultimate motive.

Well that doesn't look like it has anything to do with being a personal shopper.

I read something about this today, though I can't really remember where. I think it was Indiewire. Anyways, they liked it a lot, and there some footage too.

It's been a long day. Forgive me.

Weird to call Stewart a "troublesome actress" considering all the praise
she getting for a lot of movies she's made over the years!

I'll defend her to the ends of the earth. She's more than redeemed herself for the Twilight films, and it legitimately frustrates me that some people can't seem to move past it.

I don't know man, there were five...yes five...twilight films.

I haven't seen anything else she's been in besides Adventureland, but I haven't heard any rave reviews of anything she's done besides The Runaways.

Has anybody else seen this one? The review on the site was Meh.

You must have missed the insane amount of critical praise she got for Clouds of Sils Maria.

Also, I put zero stock in any of the reviews from this site. They almost never line up with my personal taste.

Got to see this last night and absolutely loved it. It was genuinely spooky at times which I did not expect. Stewart was phenomenal. I hope her and Assayas continue to work together because after this and Clouds, they are perfect for one another. That ending/last line was just perfect. This is day one one blu. Hopefully it doesn't take as long as Clouds did to get released here in the states.
