Default Entry Dolby Atmos receiver - Onkyo TX-SR444?

Hey all,

I have been using a cheap 5.1 surround sound receiver for the last 2 years (Sherwood RD6506). I have been investing in Dolby Atmos blu-rays, specifically Game of Thrones and recent movie releases. I have had my eye on a receiver at my local store; the Onkyo TX-SR444. I don't have much range where I live and I want to avoid buying online in case I need to send it back for being DOA or other issues. I will need to pick up 2 ceiling speakers (I assume mix & matching speaker brands is okay? (I don't want to invest in another set of speakers when I already have 5)).

Would the TX-SR444 be a good entry receiver into Dolby Atmos? https://www.jbhifi.com.au/tv-home-en...-black/763477/

Here is a list of what is available to me here in Australia; https://www.jbhifi.com.au/tv-home-en...ent/receivers/

I can haggle the price of the TX-SR444 down to about AUD$700. I can probably sell my current receiver for $200ish. So my budget is around AUD$700-$800.

Thanks,

~Jebus

Hey Jebus,

It looks like a nice entry receiver to Atmos. I have the Onkyo TX-RZ800 and love it. It is my second Onkyo receiver in 11years. I really like the brand. The only issue I would have is not supporting DTS X, it would be nice to have that option just in case it takes off. Something to think about. As for Atmos I love it. I have 5 Mirage speakers in my setup and I added a Focal satellite speakers to my ceiling. So I did the mix and match but it really sounds good.

Just got one. I'm not using Atmos-enabled speakers, and was wondering the best way to get most out of the format - having the extra 2 speakers as front height or rear height, etc.
