I still think he's Plagueis, but the visual similarities to Anakin are just too close to ignore. There's gotta be some connection there, I'm just not sure of how they could be the same person.

There are theories floating around out there, so I included it.

I voted for Snoke is just Snoke. I would rather he was Plagueis but I think Kathleen Kennedy and her commitee get a case of the shakes when the prequels are mentioned. Heaven forfend that they upset the apple cart by making such an overt link to those films.

After Rogue One and TFA got so much love, they might feel a little bolder to venture back into prequel era. It would be good business to shift public perception on that part of the sage

I voted Snoke is Anakin/Vader but what I meant is that
[Show spoiler]I think Plagueis was probably behind Anakin's birth and force sensitivity. Grooming him in order to take him over cheat death in a new body.

The main thing that weakens the theory
[Show spoiler]if he is using the remains of Anakin then why is he not wearing a respirator/gasping for breath
(unless the midichlorians are doing it for him?)

Could Snoke be Frank Langella's Skeletor? No, I guess not.

OK, I'm saying Plagueis, but I'm nowhere near feeling sure about it. Part of it might just me wanting it to be too much. But there is plenty of evidence for the theory, and none of the opposition to that evidence is very convincing to me so far.

I hate the Vader theories, I really hope that is not what we get. I don't want to see a re-animated Anakin corpse or clone possessed by half a dark force spirit or whatever.

I don't mind Snoke being a totally new (to the audience) character, but Plagueis really could be almost completely new, they can pick and choose from the novel if they want (or not at all) and the Episode III opera scene is so vague about him there is loads of room for manoeuvre on almost everything Palpatine said about him. It wouldn't have to be a huge 'a-hah!- reveal, it just be a nice connection for those paying attention.

The speculation is fun though. If not Plagueis, I'd like something I never thought of. But if Snoke is just Snoke... that would feel a bit empty.

I think he could be Palpatine. He was thrown down the hole but we never saw a body and he was very powerful. He also could have used secrets learned from Plagueis to regenerate his own broken body. Plus Palpatine architected the Empire and The First Order operates pretty much exactly the same. He also HATES Luke and fully understands his power so that would explain the importance of the hunt.

Snoke seems out of place in the Star Wars Universe.

I know. But maybe that's not so much Darth Plagueis's Theme as it is a theme representing the dark side of the force. Believe me, I'd rather Snoke was Plagueis but I just feel that Kathleen Kennedy and her team are doing everything they can to distance themselves from the prequels because they don't want to lose a certain section of the fanbase.

Sure, it's good evidence there is some kind of link between Snoke and something... but what exactly? It could be Plagueis, but it could be Palpatine, it could be Vader/Anakin, it could be just the dark side of the Force and its connection to (or mis-use/manipulation/abuse of) midi-chlorians. Or it could refer to all of it (to misuse a Han Solo quote!). It all rests on exactly what you think the Episode III music is supposed to be concerned with, and what the similarities in the TFA soundtrack are intended to refer to or connect to.

Maybe Snoke is just Snoke and he happens to love Squid Lake!
There is a sense that the music in that RotS scene is diegetic, that is part of the world of the film's sound, rather than just being pure soundtrack.

I say all that as someone favouring the Plagueis theory, as you do (judging by your vote). It's such a tease, because if you're a fan of Snoke being Plagueis, it's easy to jump on that music as a very strong piece of evidence, but it totally does not prove anything, just forms part of the case for arguing it may be possible.

I think we're going to see an increasingly relaxed attitude to including prequel-references as we go forward. There were some in TFA, but more in Rogue One (Mustafar being the giant obvious one), but this idea that Lucasfilm/Disney have some kind of ban on the Prequels being involved in future Star Wars films is demonstrably already untrue - at most I think they downplayed it for TFA to win back fans of the original trilogy who were not fans of the prequels. But like it or not, Episodes I, II and III are canon, and cannot help but be included in any story that has any depth to it, because the overall canon story is built upon them.

It seems to me that people against Snoke being Plagueis cannot have it both ways, saying both that no-one would know or remember who Plagueis was, but also that people would freak out because Plagueis was mentioned in the prequels. Again, all that would be needed would be a scene where Snoke says the Emperor of OT fame thought he had killed his old master, but he had failed, and so Plagueis decided to wait him out.

Also, with anything later than Rogue One, and especially the sequel films, it is just unnecessary most of the time to have much prequel stuff in because of the timeline of the story.

Finally, if Lucasfilm are too afraid to have even minor references to the prequel films at this point, after TFA and RO's successes, then I think they have bigger problems. And if there are fans who can't deal with a character who wasn't even in the prequels, just referred to, then they have bigger problems too, and will likely always find something to dislike anyway. Ultimately none of it matters as long Episode VIII and IX are good films. If it ever mattered at all, it didn't once TFA made $2Billion, IMHO.

I would like them to distance themselves from the prequels, but I dont think that is what they are going to do. Bringing balance to the Force was one of the first lines in TFA and Bail Organa/Jimmy Smits was featured in Rogue One. I suppose it's for the best really.

I did like it when Maz reiterated some of Yodas dialogue about the Force surrounding all living things and binding us together and NOT mentioning midichlorians. I hope that word doesn't come up in the new movies.

The real question:

Why would Plagueis, 30 years after Palpatine and Vader are dead, be using a fake name.

He's not plagueis. In fact, I'm almost positive that the leak about Snoke being the original Dark Side user is accurate, and Rey is the reincarnation of the original light side user, Snokes sister. Cause hot damn that just makes a LOT more sense.

How does she know the island? Because she's BEEN there. Maybe she even died there. Makes a hell of a lot more sense than "Luke put it in her head then left her on a random planet because movie."
