Default Opinions on "Fake" 4k?

Just starting to build my 4k library. I was wondering what your thoughts were on some of the "fake" 4k releases. For example, Mad Max Fury Road. Is it worth upgrading the BD? Thanks

I've seen some amazing 2K upscaled such as King Kong. I was really dubious at first but I've been very impressed by a lot of upscales.

For one, there's higher bit-rate so there's more bits for a better image. Second, and most importantly, HDR is probably a better reason to get 4k releases and a 4k TV.

I've noticed that my older movies shot on film and rescanned for 4k release look fantastic. No CGI done at 2k means a great filmic image.

But newer films with a 2k DI and 2k CGI don't benefit as much. However, they all can benefit from HDR. Just ensure you have a good enough TV to really show the HDR.

Also, 4k releases can be better than the blu-ray simply because it's a new scan. I say "can" because it could be worse (T2, I'm looking at you). Something like Mad Max is not a new scan so you'd probably not notice a huge difference in the image aside from the HDR, which I quite liked.

My answer to something like Mad Max would be "no, don't upgrade". If you bought the blu-ray recently I'd concentrate on upgrading DVDs, older blu-rays, or discs that you don't own before I'd upgrade something that's only a few years old.

Whilst I'd prefer a 4K DI, there are plenty of 2K-upscales that I'd definitely put up there with native content. John Wick 2 and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 come to mind, which both showcase what an upscale can do with the added benefit of HDR, which is often a bigger selling point than the actual resolution.

It's too bad that not more films are finished in native 4K, but it's definitely not something that's steered me away from the format or the content in question.

"Fake" 4K films can still benefit from upscaling, HDR, and Atmos. I was dubious on upgrading to 4K until I was blown away seeing Pacific Rim 4K demoed on an LG 4K OLED panel. And that's a "fake" 4K disc from a 2K DI.

Upscaled 4K still looks great. Prometheus, Pacific Rim, and War for the Planet of the Apes are must haves imo.

Some of my favourite looking UHD BDs are 2k-to-4K upscales like Star Trek Into Darkness, Prometheus, Alien Covenant or Battleship.
Star Trek Into Darkness has an outstanding color rendition/palette something the BD lacks and some nice looking highlights, the same with Battleship, which has much nicier and natural looking color plus some great highlights the BD lacks.
And Prometheus and Alien Covenant, which are already good looking BDs take definition and clarity one step further, plus the improved color and the deep blacks (important in both movies as most of both movie happen on dark enviroments) with great highlights (when David shoots the flare on dark night).

And from improved compression with more efficient algorithms, higher bit-rates and greater storage capacities.

One of the BEST UHD BluRays i have seen is John Wick: Chapter 2 and that is "fake"

Sums it all up IMO

Go by reviews NOT by if its fake or not!

I would go from reviews as there are plenty of 2k upscales that look amazing!

We get them because people are too lazy to do some reading. I'm not saying this guy is lazy, but the majority of them, yup.

Just stop.. If you don't understand that only pre-digital workflow scans can possibly be actually claimed to be "native" 4K (or current new titles like Dunkirk) you're either living in a fantasy world, or you need some educating. Get to it.

Most "native" 4K listings on these sites contain 2K-3.4K shooting elements or complete 2K CGI workflow. Or both. This format is more about higher bitrates w/better compresion, bit-depth (10-bit), WCG, and HDR than about native resolution.

You must be blind to say that HDR,WCG, better compression, is more important than the 3840x2160 resolution, or maybe your display is terrible, or maybe both.

I'd advise anyone not buying 4K "upscales" to educate themselves by watching these two videos:

Extremely informative.

Except that searching for something specific (even if I know I've seen it here) has been problematic for me. It is quite possible that I'm missing a step somewhere, but when I use the search function here with specific requests I get pages of everything but. Feel free to clue me in on what I might be doing wrong, because I only have that issue on this site.
