Coming Home (2014) Blu-ray

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced that it will release on Blu-ray Zhang Yimou's film Coming Home (2014), starring Gong Li, Chen Daoming, Zhang Huiwen, and Guo Tao. The release will be available for purchase on March 8.

Last year, Coming Home won Best Chinese Language Film from the Two Coasts at the Hong Kong Film Awards and Best Original Film Score Award at the Golden Horse Film Festival.

Synopsis: Lu (Chen Daoming) and Feng (Gong Li) are a devoted couple forced to separate when Lu is arrested and sent to a labor camp as a political prisoner during the Cultural Revolution. When Lu is released years later, he returns home to find his beloved wife has amnesia and remembers little of her past. Unable to recognize him, she still patiently awaits her husbands return. A stranger within his own family, Lu is determined to awaken his wifes memory through gentle displays of unconditional and eternal love.

Release date: March 8th, 2016
Audio: DTS-HD Master 5.1. Seems no Dolby Atmos, like in Japan.

That's a big disappointment if the Atmos track is not included. This film has taken a long time to get any sort of English-friendly release, and if anyone outside of Asia could have provided the Atmos track, it would have been Sony.

If the audio really is only DTS-HD MA 5.1, I may just wait for a Hong Kong or Mainland China release, as those regions tend to provide Atmos or 7.1 audio tracks the most often.

Hopefully, the Sony release does have Atmos.

they could have at least encoded the audio in 7.1

apparently Sony Classic's doesn't take it's cues from it's parent company to encode it's titles either in Atmos or 4K - 'Leviathan' which went out theatrically 4K, didn't get a great review PQ wise from bluray.com (3.5 rating).

It hovers between OK and good. Not in the same league as Yimou's other films starring Gong Li.

Curse of the Golden Flower? Yeah, that was pretty good so I'd be surprised if this one is actually better.

I forgot about Curse of the Golden Flower which I liked but yeah about the same in terms of satisfaction. Also, Coming Home is a small, more somber film.

Makes it sound like a return to his original roots, I hope it's more emotionally satisfying than Gong's earlier drama film Memoirs of a Geisha.
