Default Ms. Purple (2019)

Quote:
From award-winning filmmaker Justin Chon (GOOK, 2017), MS. PURPLE is a poignant drama
about Asian American sister and brother, Kasie (Tiffany Chu) and Carey (Teddy Lee), who were
raised and are now seemingly stuck in Koreatown, Los Angeles. Abandoned by their mother and
brought up by their father, the siblings continue to struggle with deep emotional wounds from
the difficulty of the parental dynamic. Now, with their father on his death bed, the estranged
Carey comes home to help Kasie care for him. As they reunite over their dying father, Kasie and
Carey confront their shared past, attempting to mend their relationship.

I’m not sure if I’ll be able to endure the strain of yet another non-White film trying to take my money. Can’t we just have films that don’t utilize such “themes” so moviegoing can be “fun” again?

Is this sarcasm?

I really want to see this... seems like it gets some sort of digital release in November, but I'd thoroughly enjoy treating myself to see it sooner. It looks like based on their Instagram that it gets a very limited theatrical run with one theatre just a few miles from me. I'll likely check it out and let everyone know my thoughts if I commit to seeing it in theatres.

Just got back from watching it with my wife. We absolutely loved it. Without going into great detail, I will just say this movie did everything right. Excellent acting, directing, score, and chemistry between the two leads. Extremely emotional film that doesn't shy around how hard life can be.

One of my favorites of the year. In terms of an Asian-American production, this was much better than The Farewell... which I loved, but it is not as strong as this movie as a whole. I will support this without hesitation should it get a bluray release.

Well, that's very high praise indeed! I haven't seen either film, so I can't comment either way. But, I'm glad you both enjoyed this one. Can't wait to see it.

Just a FYI - I talked with the distributor and they confirmed that a Blu-ray would likely be released in January 2020 though no exact date has been confirmed for that month.

Good to hear. I'm sure Oscilloscope Films will deliver a Grade A Blu-ray release.

Saw this last night. What a great surprise. Really loved it and agree it's probably better than The Farewell. The photography was excellent (shades of Wong Kar Wai in some of the lighting and post effects.) and superbly directed too.

I didn't realise it was Justin Chon until after I watched it - so it's no surprise I did, as I really enjoyed 'Gook'.

Excellent film.

Acted well and shot well. Aspects of the plot, however, I found far-fetched (running the comatose father through the busy streets, and the sex workers beating up the guys in the club, to name a few). I also found the relationship between the estranged brother and sister to be almost . . . pointless - other than to say that the title character has it rough and is alone in taking care of her father. The most interesting parts were learning any background (the flashbacks) as to why Ms. Purple is the way she is and faces what she does. Ultimately, I didn't feel this movie was very fleshed out or had much narrative direction.
