Default Quo Vadis in HD Blu-ray

I mean look at this.

The fact it's in color is almost a miracle. Full screen, with no enhanced audio... Ok so it's restored but honestly, BFD, why is this not happy with DVD? I think that format still has it's place. For example, nobody is ever going to bother enhancing my copies of "Matlock" and "Due South" to 1080p Blu-ray (Some episodes could really use it but it won't happen)

Somebody do. Back then, the Academy Ratio 1.33:1 was the standard. So you're not going to get 1.85.:1 as that would REALLY anger purists. If you don't like this, I don't think you'll be happy with Wizard Of Oz next year.

As for the audio, that's where Warner screws up again.

I am having a difficult time telling whether or not you are sarcastic so I am simply going to answer your question:

Yes, I do care!

I care. Just like I cared about The Searchers in "full screen" and Casablanca in "full screen".

I care too! Even though these older films are not "widescreen" - this ratio is still considered the ratio of the time. For God's sake!!! Bring on more classics that aren't all explosions and shoot-em up, "bad-ass" action movies!

All movies should be available in HD, preferably on Blu. Other people than you might have a different taste in movies. If you don't care about the movie, how about just ignoring it?

If you are being serious, then you are being ignorant. A lot of people care about older catalogue titles. Blu-ray is the perfect format to give films of a considerable age a luster not seen in decades.

I'd rather have older classics on Blu-ray than none at all. The fact that it is "full screen" is because they didn't have widescreen back then. I think more people would be mad if it wasn't in it's original 1.33:1 ratio. I sure wouldn't want to have it cropped or stretched and distorted just for the sake of filling up the whole screen.

Every Blu-ray release will have an improvement over the DVD, even if it's a minimal improvement.

Hell ya I care!

The movie was shot on 35mm film after all. Plenty of detail for a Blu-ray release.

No I understand that it was shot in 1:33:1 it just seems odd. For example, I don't think the older crowd is really doing Blu-ray. You're lucky if they have DVD. I mean the majority of us won't race to pick up Quo Vadis. I was in an FYE store I frequent last week, talking Blu-rays with the manager as always. A guy came in looking for Smallville: Season 7. The manager asked him "Do you want DVD or Blu-ray?" The guy snapped on him like "You're missing the point! I just want Smallville". The manager was like "Yeah but on what format?" The guy was like "I don't even know what Blu-ray is. What is it?" We literally had to dumb it down to "It is a new type of disc that has much more storage space. It allows for the movie to be larger and clearer like in HD" "I don't get the HD thing" he replied. "What's different?" (Now this wasn't an older man. 40's, early 40's maybe). We said "The larger the image is the clearer it can be. the pixels that make up the screen are not as distorted. On the new Blu-ray disc it allows it to be much sharper and the audio to be much better because it's 3 times better (I said this based on the 3 HD levels) than normal TV or DVD"

So sure, there's benefit in Casablanca I guess. That's like one of the top 3 greatest films of all time. But when they do hardly any work on a film like Quo Vadis, it seems like a waste. Films like RV and others like it also seems a bit of a waste, at least at the price they sell for. They should be cheaper

How are they doing "hardly an work on a film like Quo Vadis"? Are you referring to the mono soundtrack? That's a good thing. The source is mono. Why would I want a gimmicky surround remix? The only thing I could think of that they could of done better in that regard is offering a one channel lossless PCM track.

Oh and for the record. I am 22. I am definitely interested in the older classics on Blu-ray.

You know there are some folks who do love movies and they chose to move to Blu-ray Disc. What sounds like junk to one person may not be for another.

I am one of the few people who disliked The Dark Knight. Nearly every review I read has the same criticisms I do but they still recommend the movie. I am not going to tell people that this shouldn't be on BD.

Its also more than just numbers with Blu-ray Disc. For films like, An American in Paris and The French Connection, new masters that vary differently from the DVDs are used.

An American in Paris will get a new restoration for Blu-ray Disc. The French Connection was given a new master supervised by William Friedkin.

Quo Vadis has been restored using the same technique as Casablanca. Quite frankly, Casablanca on BD has much more depth and clarity than ever before.

Do yourself a favor...rent Casablanca on DVD and then on Blu and then tell us there is no benefit.

I don't get it... what's the point of creating a thread for something you don't like? Why not just move on? Obviously there are supporters of Quo Vadis here. Just because you don't like something doesn't mean others have to have the same opinion. The wider variety of movies available, the better. It's best to offer something for everyone to try to get more supporters for blu-ray.

The picture was originally in 1.33:1 originally, so it should be that way on the Blu-ray. The audio was originally in mono, so it also should be that way on the blu-ray instead of using some fakey surround mix especially considering the elements they have to work with.

Anyone who thinks that 'Quo Vadis' or any other classic film doesn't deserve to be released on BD should take a look at the fabulous screen shots here:

http://www.dvdbeaver.com/film2/DVDRe...is_blu-ray.htm

I, for one, can't wait!

I'll be buying this on Blu for sure. So many of these "older" movies are 10x better than the vast majority of anything Hollywood puts out today.

I care nothing for "The Wizard Of Oz", but "The Day The Earth Stood Still" Blu-ray is fantastic!

Look, I'm not sure if I'll pick up "Quo Vadis" or not, and I do question the reasoning behind releasing movies in the 4x3 ratio* at this point in the format's life, Blu-ray can make a big difference to these movies.

* movies with remakes coming out, ala TDTESS, movies getting released D&D with DVD counterparts, ala TDTESS, or movies available on HD DVD that WB needs to catch up on, ala "Casablance" being the exceptions
