Very appealing poster, isn't it? I liked that kid in 'Pete's Dragon', btw.

The question is: will Haynes return to his Poison/Safe/Far from Heaven glory days or will it be another self-indulgent film like Carol? The fact that he didn't spent a year in editing is a positive sign.

Sorry mate, but you have The Master as your profile picture, and you're gonna call Carol self-indulgent like it's a bad thing?

The Master at least has a good reason. You have a sprawling plot set over many years, 65mm cinematography, one of the best method actors today in Joaquin Phoenix, and Anderson challenging the viewer with its madness. It's also a story that needed to be told (too long had studios been afraid to tell a story about the bizarre nature of Scientology, though Anderson had to change the name for legal reasons, he did the impossible) and it might be years before anyone dares to make a similar film with the same impact.

Carol is an ordinary love story with one of the most overpraised actors today (Rooney Mara) that shouldn't have taken a year to edit. It thinks it's more important than it really is. Take away the period setting and it being based on a Patricia Highsmith story and you have a more Oscar baity version of Freeheld (a more watchable film as it's not self-interested in appealing to awards voters). Moonlight did it much better with less time and less ego.

But for me, it's a little too hard to take Haynes seriously after he did a five hour remake of a film that wasn't even two hours in its original form for reasons that only make sense to Todd Haynes. That makes Peter Jackson seem like a master of pacing.

Todd Haynes is a "visionary" now, too.

This is one terribly cut trailer, imo. But I'm still in, since it's the end result that counts.

My wife is a Deaf and Hard of Hearing Teacher and her DHH students and her LOVED the book. I didn't really enjoy it as much as I liked Hugo Cabret and thought it could have been longer, but I'm hopeful the way the story is laid out may work better on film.

Fact: I've only seen Safe from Todd Haynes. (and loved it)

Only thing I've seen from Todd Haynes is Carol, and I didn't really like it very much.

I don't really think I'm missing out at all.
