Default really general audio question

with all this lossy lossless dolbt dts truehd 5.1 7.1 pcm etc etc etc.....

break this down for a total audio noob.....what do i want? what do i wanna make sure i can use? and most important what just sounds good.....

i mean can you really tell the differance in these by ear? or just when you have a computer telling you what its doing?

also are these on the disc side of things or the receiver side of things.....

no tech jargon please

short answer is you want an HDMI Receiver that can process multichannel PCM signals.

Just make sure you get a HDMI 1.3a (at least) capable receiver that can internally decode the latest high-def audio streams sent from certain Blu-ray players via bitstream. The ability to send PCM via HDMI connection is a given in these receivers.

Any of the new Onkyos, Pioneer Elites and Denon will do. I guess the biggest deterrent could be their price. Your least expensive option right now is the Onkyo TX-SR605 which you can buy online for less than $400. I myself am a huge fan on the Pioneer Elites.

the safest bet is to look at the Onkyo TX-SR605.

It has HDMI 1.3 decoding capabilities, as well can process 7.1PCM.

There are a couple cheaper receivers out there that can process multichannel PCM...but the Onkyo is probably the smartest way to go if anything.
