Ah, looks like it will be a steelbook. At least I won't have to double dip on that season.

The Red Wedding and the battle scene in episode 4 of season 7 would look fantastic on UHD. Hopefully they release seasons 2-7 soon as well.

I'm sure the only way to get seasons 2-7 will be to buy the 4k boxset.

Same thing that happened with The Sopranos on BD. A season one release to "test the waters" or fund the remaster followed by a day-and-date final season for those who aren't upgrading. Expect the rest to be only in a complete series set.

it could take years to do the rest. need to be realistic. season 8 was easy for them to do since they were already working on it. finding 3-4 months to remaster a season is not easy when they have current projects going on. then you're looking at 3 weeks of time for a 2 hr
movie. now imagine an entire season that's 15-20 hours long. now times that by 6 for the remaining seasons.

Each episode is more or less 60 minutes with the exception of 6x10 and 7x06 which are 70 minutes and 7x07 which is 80 minutes. 10 hours per season, not 15 and definitely not 20.

Except we don’t know if the remasters for 2-7 have been in the works. I’d like to think so. It would be a HUGE missed opportunity if they don’t release the complete series on 4K day and date with Season 8.

…and I bet that’s EXACTLY what they’re doing.

come on, the way HBO has been milking the sweet nectar of human kindness out this series with how many iterations of Blus already? there will be at least 3 iterations of 4K UHD release before HBO calls it quits.

and then,

right around 8K starts gaining momentum, HBO be like "let's milk those GOT tits again!"

Exactly!!! Like theyre not goin to milk their biggest cash cow, especially with one confirmed spin off / prequel filming, and 3 or 4 more in development. Its why the chicken littles in the Season 1 4K UHD thread are so funny...

opportunity doesn't mean anything if the filmmakers don't have time. but you guys act like they can just snap their fingers and it be done. or maybe they just spend their time sitting on the couch all day long posting in internet forums :P it could take 2-3 months of straight work to do 1 season and that's assuming no interruptions or current projects. if there's breaks or interruptions that could drag 1 season out to 4-5 months or maybe longer.

I agree it will take some time for them to "do" all of the seasons. As I have posted before, I don't expect the 4K UHD set for a little bit. I think there is a slim but possible chance before the end of this year. I'm thinking they'll use it as a tie in to the prequel series, which I'm betting is coming in 2020 since its in production "early summer" of this year.

I don't watch Game of Thrones, but I'm just glad to see another UHD TV release. I'm pretty sure that so far, all of the TV releases we've had have come from WB, and then HBO, who are part of Time Warner, too. No other studio is doing TV releases, and that's more than a bit unnerving. Yes, Netflix releases Stranger Things, but that's all they release, and given that those are retailer exclusives, in my opinion, they are special cases.

I have a feeling that all of the other seasons are being worked on, and that there will be a complete series box set, but this season shouldn't have the upscaling issues that the first season does, so right now, there's probably no reason not to buy it. Hell, I might even buy it, just to support UHD TV releases. Of course there will be a Blu-ray box set when the series ends, but a UHD box set is far from guaranteed--the fate of numerous shows on Blu-ray, even popular ones that should be on the format, can testify to that--and if individual seasons don't sell on the format, it's probably going to be a lot harder to justify creating six further seasons of the show on the format.

I think we should just buy and enjoy what is released, and consider the money being in support of further releases. If you're holding off because you think you'll be that miffed about "re-buying" as theoretical complete series UHD box, then simply throw this season and potentially others onto eBay and get some cash back for them. It's not a perfect solution, but we've seen with Blu-ray how many times the "wait for the box set" mentality has failed.

EDIT: Never mind, I didn't realize that the eighth season is the final season. I thought they were going to ten seasons, but obviously, if this is the final season, then I would still say it makes sense to buy now, but obviously, waiting for a box set is more understandable given these circumstances.
