Default StudioCanal Kurosawa RAN Blu-ray

Amazon lists RAN available for pre-order... it also says it was released yesterday. After my "life gamble" and "ashes of time" blu-ray pre-orders literally vanished, I am wondering what the deal is with this one.

There is a RAN version released by French distributor Canal +.
I bought it, played it , and returned it next day to the shop.
This version is nearly better than the dvd-release, so don't get fooled.

Criterion are not releasing 'Ran' on Blu-ray - they did announce it but then cancelled the release as their rights to the title had expired.

It's now due to be released on Blu-ray in the US by Lionsgate on February 16th, along with certain other titles in the Studio Canal collection. The transfer will be identical to that already available in Europe.

Which is most unfortunate, indeed.

It's funny this thread started, I was just watching Ran this morning.

I was very disapointed back in April when the Criterion release was cancel for BD. I have my DVD for now but I hope to get a good BD release sometime in the future, this movie deserve such a treatment IMO.

I'll stick with my excellent Criterion DVD for the time being. The screenshots I've seen of the StudioCanal version look like the DVD anyway.

I don't think Studio Canal will do well with their RAN Blu-ray releases, esp since many say it is upconverted video not from the film transfer.

Too bad Criterion would have transferred and released it well.

Studio Canal's best option would be to start over on the BD release.

I thought you imported Le Mepris at the same time I did. I assume it's the same disc, which, aside from some color pulsations, is pretty nice.

I forgot to tell people when it shipped it got "lost", so I demanded my money back. I was so mad I had to wait for a month then it got lost that I didn't reply it on here. But now as long as I can wait, Feb is going to be a huge month full of movies for me with this, the 3 Criterions and Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans being the main focus for me.

January is big as well, 3 Criterions, Magnolia, Boogie Nights (rumored), and Une Femme Mariee.

See, you should've imported it through Amazon!

Lionsgate just had to nab the rights to release a crappy transfer.

So it goes...

At least Criterion is releasing Sanjuro and Yojimbo in March and not Lionsgate.

Default Question about StudioCanal's upcoming release of Ran

I feel a little stupid asking this but is it going to have English subtitles? I'm only asking because I look on the page for Ran listed on this site and it has about 8 different subtitle languages, yet not a listing for English. I also noticed that it has a listing for an English Master Audio track? Are we getting a dub or is this English track one of the commentary tracks?

Lionsgate is just releasing a US version of the international Studio Canal Blu-ray Disc.

So it will have DTS-HD MA Japanese with English subtitles.

I'm skeptical that english subtitles will be included. Reviews I've read of the Studio Canal (France) HD-DVD release mentioned that english subtitles were missing. Also, there is a Lionsgate news release that indicates no english subtitles at
http://www.lionsgatepublicity.com/ep...Collection.doc

Read to the bottom of the document under the heading "program information" and you'll notice that english subtitles aren't listed for RAN. They are listed for the blu-ray of Contempt but not for RAN. This is a deal breaker for me, even if it is in blu-ray. No english subtitles = no purchase. I can't stand listening to english dubs especially for a classic like RAN.

Me, too. Which is why there will be English subtitles. Lionsgate is not going to risk a huge sales loss by not including English subs.

This is the "Studio Canal Collection", not a release by Canal specifically. Canal does not control the film in any English speaking territories, but their partners like LG and Optimum do, so they left off English subtitles because no one else was putting the film out at the time.

So far as I know an english dub doesn't even exist for the film, and no one who purchases Kurosawa films would want one anyway. Dub-only would be completely unmarketable
