South Korea Malena Uncut Version

Malèna Blu-ray

Malena will be released in mid-January next year (2013) in Korea.
It will be the uncut version of the movie and contain English subtitle (and most likely region-free).
I will update the further info when it is officially announced.
Below is the temporary image of the Blu-ray package (1 BD + 1 DVD).

But will it have the hilarious optical censoring when Korean subtitles are selected?

If not, I am keeping my DVD...

No. I heard from the publisher that there will be no optical censoring.

Which label is bringing this out, by the way?

It is GreenNarae Media which are releasing Miramax titles (eg. Chicago, Good Will Hunting, Shaolin Soccer, etc.) in Korea.

Well this is fantastic news if it is true, and this is uncensored.

Fingers crossed for English subtitles then, and a good transfer.

Thanks, for the info. This looks like a very handsome release in line with Spectrum's DVD edition, but it seems strange that their are no pre-orders up yet with the usual suspects if this is indeed going to show up in less than a month.

Thank you as well, nello.

Agreed regarding the pre-order. I looked as well and could not find any info.

A uncut BD release was guaranteed after I bought the DVD earlier in the year. You guys should chip in and get me the Star Wars Saga set, then the theatrical editions will be out six-months later....

Pre-order is not started yet. I guess it will not be started until the first week of January. It may be delayed a little, but this one is definitely coming soon.

This is beyond strange, if true. Miramax are not licensing the longer cut of the film internationally - because they never managed it - and certainly should not have the right to authorize English subtitles for a non-English speaking territory. I already mentioned this in a different thread some time ago. So, there are two options here:

1. The transfer for this release is coming from a different party, which has to be Medusa as they put together the Director's Cut. This would surprise me, though, as I would have expected it to surface in Italy first.

2. This would be an upscaled release. Can you confirm that the transfer will be in native 1080p?

I haven't seen the transfer personally (I am not related to the publisher, just have a friend who works for them). The publisher says transfer is in native 1080p and they got the HD master from Italy.

Fantastic. Thank you so much for the info, nello.

As I suspected, it isn't coming from Miramax then. This is possibly great news.

Merry Christmas

Wow! Great news! I've got my fingers crossed for great PQ and AQ, and English subtitles!

I've never seen the Non-Miramax Version, but found the following detailed comparison: http://www.schnittberichte.com/report.php?ID=835:

"The movie Malèna offers unbelievably beautiful cinematography, Ennio Morricone's best score in years and a phenomenal lead actress. Despite all of that, the Oscar-decorated producers from Miramax could resist to remove 15 minutes of what makes the movie a masterpiece. In part because they did not want brilliant shots and ingenious music to dominate whole sequences of the movie and in part because they are from a country where prudery is the highest of all moral virtues coupled with an inclination to spread this virtue around the globe. Only in Italy, its country of origin, it was possible to release the movie uncensored.

And again Hollywood-haters are proved right. Did the Oscar-jury watch the uncensored version? Definitely not. Could Ennio Morricone have taken home the Oscar home after his fifth nomination? After all, two how his best compositions were lost in the cutting-room. And how about Lajos Koltai, who might have won the Oscor if not 17 minutes of brilliant shots had been erased? We will never know. Thanks Bob. Thanks Harvey. Thanks Miramax."

Wow! This sounds incredible. I cannot imagine how great the two Morricone compositions are, as the score is already truly phenomenal! I decided not to read too much about the cut scenes as I want to see the full version as "fresh" as possible.

I love this film. I purchased the uncut Korean DVD 2 years ago and fell in love with the film even more so this is great news. But if there's a market for the uncut version out there why is this only available from Korea? Very Strange.

This is wonderful, even if i'd rather not get my hopes up. I haven't bought any version on any format, because i always figured some company would give this film a proper release. So far, this looks like what i've been waiting for.

I have the Korean uncut DVD, which comes in a beautiful case, and the Blu-ray version looks like it has equally handsome packaging. Now I'm hoping that Paradise will also get a Blu-ray release in Korea.
