Paramount NCIS: The Twelfth Season (2014-2015)

Quote:
Four weeks ago, on the first of this month, we brought you the announcement from CBS Home Entertainment and Paramount Home Media Distribution that NCIS: Naval Criminal Investigative Service - The Complete 12th Season is coming to DVD on August 18th. That report passed along a nice set of bonus material for the 6-disc set, too!

Today CBS/Paramount went further, announcing that the same title - with the exact same list of extras - will also be available for general release on September 15th on high-def Blu-ray Disc, a 6-BD package enclosed in an "O-sleeve" (see cover art below). The DVD is up for pre-order at Amazon by now, showing a $55.98 SRP list price, but the Blu-ray version hasn't apparently been listed at the big e-tailer just yet. We're not sure why there's a 4-week difference in the street dates between the two formats, but if you prefer the high-def version then it appears you'll have to be just a bit more patient!

They should release past seasons on BD as well.

Yeah, if people actually buy this release I could see us getting 1-11 on BD at some point and guarantee that we'll get 13+ on BD to.

It won't happen. Too many people will refuse to buy this because the other seasons aren't available on Blu.

People have been burned far too often with TV on BD.

That's the problem. People say they have been burned or won't buy because past seasons aren't on BD. People only have themselves to blame when future seasons skip BD.

If future seasons also sold good than we would also most likely get past seasons also. It's all up to us as consumers.

Yep. It's based solely on sales. If NCIS Season 12 doesn't sell fairly well, 1-11 will not be made, and 13+ likely won't either. I don't know the details of Hawaii Five-O, but if they made a few seasons and then stopped, that's because they weren't selling... (or at least, not well enough) Obviously most people don't care, or they wouldn't have stopped. Same thing happened in DVD... I have a couple of TV shows on DVD that they only released one season of, and then stopped because no one bought it... There's always a risk with doing older shows, or going back and doing past seasons, as well. There _really_ has to be a demand for it for them to even consider it.

It's basically a popularity contest where you vote by purchasing. If it's _really_ popular, the old ones get made. If it's just 'kinda popular', then they may continue with the new ones at least. If everyone says 'screw it, DVDs are good enough', this is all you get.

There's always the 'catch-22'...
Consumer: 'I won't buy unless previous seasons are announced!'
Studio: 'We won't consider previous seasons unless this sells well.'

IMO, if they really wanted the BD to sell well, CBS would release it first, then the DVD 4 weeks later.
Because the DVD buying base is so entrenched for this series with 11 seasons of sales for as low as ~$10 for the earliest ones, I can't see any way that BD sales will take off and DVD sales will slow down or tank at this point. The series probably is getting long in the tooth anyway, and only has a few more years to go.

I wonder if New Orleans might get a release too?

Is NSIC in HD decent image quality? I've been pretty disappointed to the DVD releases from an image quality perspective, from Season 1 on. Not SD related issues but just what I'd guess was photography related and mastering related. The early series seemed to have (from memory) a reddish or orange tint. And even the last season I watched on DVD (10) was showing bad lighting, fuzzy picture in many places. It isn't like they have a great DP like Supernatural's Serge Ladouceur.

Don't get me wrong, I love the show (story and people wise), but have found it visually just painful to watch.

Day one for sure! Love this show! I suggest that everyone who likes this show to buy it day one so that future seasons come out on bluray. I just wish Paramount would continue to release Hawaii Five O and NCIS LA on bluray.

Count me as someone else who doesn't understand what the hell is going on here.

More TV on Blu-ray is great, I will fully support this release and buy it on release day, even though NCIS is not a show I've ever watched beyond the occasional USA Network re-run. I guess it's time to start watching the series (probably via DVD) to prepare for September.

Having said all that, I'll again repeat that I don't understand what the hell is going on here.

But you have to hand it to CBS/Paramount for bringing the largest variety of American network shows to BD, virtually single-handed.

Maybe (just maybe) they are already planning more for Blu-ray in some kind of gift set for Christmas or so? They would want the latest season to also be out on Blu-ray. I hope that could happen. It would be awesome.

In any case, I hope more comes out. I am glad this was announced!

To be honest, I've always been stunned that NCIS hasn't made it to Blu-ray before now. Supposedly, it's consistently the most-watched show in the United States, and re-runs are on constantly. The series also appears to be extremely popular abroad, especially in English-language territories. Even if the show isn't squarely in the television genres that studios think are Blu-ray-friendly (like Sci-Fi, Horror, and whatever is on HBO), I always assumed a show that is this hugely popular and sustainable has to work on BD.

In any event, I just bought the Season 1-11 DVD bundle off eBay for less than $111 shipped, so I'll have my work cut out for me watching the show from the start in preparation for the BD release of Season 12 in September.

Really.... I've bought all releases on first week of the league, bones, the 100, it's always sunny in Philadelphia, and the Simpsons, so excuse me if I myself have felt burned from TV on BD. And these are all shows still on the air. Only 3 shows I'll purchase now are Arrow, Flash, and Big Bang Theory unless a complete series is released. On the fence with Gotham because it's Fox and they are atrocious.

Gotham is produced by Warner Brothers, not Fox.
