Some of these aren't indirect sequels, they're actual sequels.

In the spirit of contributing to the actual thread title, I'm going with the trilogy of Life of Crime - Jackie Brown - Out of Sight.

Yeah, but they don't follow the same formula as what the previous films did, so that's what I mean.

The 40 Year Old Virgin is a perfect 23-years-later unofficial sequel to The Last American Virgin. See also Enemy Of The State and The Conversation.

I guess I don't understand the topic. What is Die Hard an indirect sequel of?

I'd say something like Fierce Creatures is an indirect sequel of A Fish Called Wanda

Yeah, Die Hard was based on a novel called "Nothing Lasts Forever" which was a sequel to the novel on which "The Detective" was based. Frank Sinatra was actually contractually obligated to be given first crack at the lead role when they were casting Die Hard in 1987, but he turned it down saying he was "too old and too rich" to take the part.

Again, these are clear and direct "official" sequels.

Coming to America is another one that I enjoy (an indirect sequel to Trading Places due to the cameo appearance of two specific characters).

Evil Dead 2 and Army of Darkness have some continuity inconsistences in the beginning, but no. I consider them sequels. When Ash buries his dead girlfriend and gets attacked by the evil force, that's clearly where the first Evil Dead left off.

Mad Max 2 and Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome are straight up sequels. I know Mad Max 2 was the one that mostly introduced the franchise to Americans, but it's still tonely similar to the first movie. Now you can make the argument that Fury Road is an indirect sequel. Because correct me if I'm wrong, didn't they change the gender of Max's child in Fury Road? I don't know. My memory is fuzzy on that.

Split was probably a solid indirect sequel you didn't really know was connected at all until that end scene.

Not a favorite but much more enjoyable than its reputation, Soldier briefly shows the battles at the Shoulder of Orion and Tannhäuser Gate and among the piles of garbage you can see a kaput Spinner (there was a broken Voight Kampf testing kit on the set but I don't know if you can actually see that in the film).

Many of Jacques Demy's films are set in an interconnected cinematic universe revolving around the port city of Nantes. The main character in Lola reappears in Model Shop, which shares characters, in conversation if not in person, with Bay of Angels, The Umbrellas of Cherbourg and The Young Girls of Rochefort. The
[Show spoiler]jilted lover
of Lola reappears as the
[Show spoiler]husband of Catherine Deneuve
in Umbrellas, etc.

The HBO Watchman series. It's more a sequel to the comic than the film based on the changes in the film.

Maybe Burton's Alice in Wonderland, sort of an indirect sequel to the animated film.

Incredible Hulk feels like it could be an indirect sequel of Lee's Hulk film.

I've heard the Unforgiven can be considered an indirect sequel to Eastwood's man with no name trilogy films, but I'd need to re-watch them to compare.

Event Horizon is just one Cenobite away from being a Hellraiser sequel.

Btw, Die Hard's script originally started out as a sequel to Commando, with John Matrix in John McClane's place and Jenny in the role that eventually became Holly.

Die Hard is an indirect sequel to Commando and Predator. The references to the fictional country of Val Verde (mentioned in Die Hard 2) connect the films.
