It feels like deja vu all over again. Five years ago, I was ready to buy a new tv. I believe 1080p was the thing at the time. I picked out a Samsung at Best Buy as I loved the picture in the store.
The tv ended up driving me nuts. I tested it out with Game of Thrones blu-ray, and the colors were look great and pop out in one scene, then looked wrong in other. I constantly kept switching picture modes, different calibration, nothing looked normal to me. Skin tones too red or orange or greyish. And the worst part was the image looked awful if I looked at it from any angle beyond just straight ahead. I ended up returning the tv for a Sony Bravio and was happy with the default setting. Now I bought this Samsung 4k (samsung un43mu6290) expecting to be blown away by the image. So far, it has been underwhelming and annoying. The colors only seem to pop if I have it on standard picture mode, but I don't see really any upgrade in detail with a standard blu-ray. When I switch to Natural or Movie, the colors look more faded and wrong to me. I found out yesterday that the HDR enhanced mode has to be switched on in the settings. I tested it last night with The Game criterion. The detail seemed to be better, but the colors felt muted, almost grayish. I ended up switching back to the default settings. I next tested with Netflix streaming Jessica Jones using the HDR enhanced mode. I was pleased with the colors in the intro, but the flesh tones made everyone look yellowish or gray to me. My final test will be with a 4K blu-ray player and 4K disc. If that doesn't look amazing then I'll really feel that 4K is overhyped BS. I wish I had just waited for the prices to drop more and get a Sony instead. I hate calibrating, and constantly feeling like the colors aren't right. Plus the viewing angles are awful. It's surprising because this model has so many reviews of people raving about the colors. Maybe Samsung just isn't for me. |
