Dragon’s Lair (Live Action Adaptation)

Ryan Reynolds is in talks to star in and produce a live-action feature adaptation of Dragon’s Lair, one of the most iconic arcade video games from the 1980s. The plot of the video game is epic in scope: a knight named Dirk the Daring must rescue the fetching Princess Daphne from the clutches of the evil dragon known as Singe and the wizard Mordroc.

After almost a year of negotiations, Netflix has closed a deal to pick up the rights to the game. Roy Lee will produce via his Vertigo Entertainment with Trevor Engelson of Underground Films. Don Bluth, Gary Goldman and Jon Pomeroy are also producing. Reynolds will produce via his banner, Maximum Effort.

Dan and Kevin Hageman, who worked on The Lego Movie and most recently Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, will write the script.

Lair was, at one point, the most popular game in America. It hit the scene in 1983 and promised to revolutionize the arcade industry with its movie-style animation that hailed from Bluth, who would later go on to direct animated movies An American Tail and All Dogs Go to Heaven, and its envelope-pushing technology that used LaserDisc to advance the story. I'm with you when it comes to Hitman's Bodyguard and Free Guy but I think RR is surprisingly perfect casting for this.

A cool way to do this, would be to have several actors cameo as knights that fail. That way we see some of the deaths. Then, we see how Dirk succeeds. Just watching Dirk "speed run" wouldn't be as much fun.

I don't get this...

For years Don wanted to do the project as an animated film and he even had the prequel concepts of when Dirk becomes a full blown knight leading up to the castle we've seen from the game. This has been set back so many times due to funding that he now somehow just gave that up??!?

Sounds like a wonderful cameo for Bruce Campbell. Maybe Hugh Jackman since him and Reynolds are friends.

It's really not that complicated. You, me, and some others would love to see a Bluth feature length Dragons Lair film but there's no money in that. Netflix is in the business of making money, and there's a much higher profit potential in a Ryan Reynolds live action film then in that.
