Default Roku Ultra Question

Dos Roku Ultra stream Netflix and Vudu in Dolby Vision or HDR? How does it handle 4K streaming? Thanks!

According to the specs listed on their website, it's HDR10. I don't have an Ultra, but my old Roku 4 streams 4K flawlessly.

My Roku Ultra streams HDR, but my TV is HDR and doesn't have Dolby Vision. I've only watched a couple movies in 4K on Vudu with it because my Internet isn't the recommended speed for streaming 4K, but it played those movies fine.

Since many UHD titles on VuDu have Dolby Atmos available, does that mean that Roku Ultra will allow me to stream VuDu UHD titles in Atmos? Is Roku Atmos ready?

I believe so. The titles show as playing Atmos when I watch them, but my receiver is a 2010 model and it's not capable of Atmos. It converts the Atmos tracks down to Dolby Digital 5.1.

Also, my Roku Ultra is the 2016 model, which has an optical output. I run the audio to my receiver with the optical out, and I run the video directly from the Roku to my TV through HDMI. I believe the 2017 Roku Ultra models do not have the optical output.

I never use optical, only HDMI. I currently have a Roku 2, but since I purchased a new laser projector that accepts 4K playback I rather switch to the Ultra and gain not only the increase in resolution on many titles from VuDu and Netflix, but also gain Atmos since I do have a full 5.1.2 Atmos surround sound system in my room

Thumbs up

the Roku Ultra standalone, streams 4K/HDR10.

my TCL 55P605 4K tv has Roku Ultra built into it and it streams 4K/DV/HDR10/ATMOS(DD+)

both work flawlessly. I currently have moved my RU standalone to a tv that only supports 1080p. I don't know if the RU standalone streams ATMOS because I never connected it to an input on the 4K tv.

I have had absolutely no trouble with anything Roku and I'm very happy with them. i now have two TCL TV's with Roku Ultra built into them (got the TCL 49S405 for my 2 channel setup) and i love them both and have yet to have a streaming/video or audio issue with either of them.

i was watching The Tick on Amazon Prime last night, in UHD.......Beautiful!

So VuDu UHD will be played in HDR rather than in Dolby Vision + Atmos when Atmos is listed

Dolby Vision is not supported by RU standalone and will play in HDR10. if your receiver is ATMOS capable, it will play ATMOS via DD+. if you are using an HDMI's ARC feature, it must support DD+ or you will ONLY get DD+ not ATMOS.

I intend to connect Roku Ultra to my Denon receiver and stream 4K content on my new laser projector which plays 4K without HDR.

you will be fine, enjoy! on a side not, i have all my gear (and i mean all of it) that has an Ethernet port connected to my Cat6 gigabit Ethernet network. if possible, i recommend wired over wireless because so many things can affect wireless. i have not used the Roku Ultra standalone (or either of my Roku Ultra 4K TV's) with wireless connectivity, so, i cannot speak to how good it is.

keep us posted.

I have my current Roku 2 wired connected too, but ironically my 4K Oled TV is Wi-Fi connected and streaming in Dolby Vision and HDR 4K is flawless on it.
I intend to replace Roku 2 with Roku Ultra so the ethernet port being taken by Roku 2 right now will go to Roku Ultra

I posted more comments about the Roku Ultra and Dolby Vision HDR and I also posted comments about changes to the 2017 version of the Roku Ultra that removed the optical output.
