Strange, that the cover sticker mentions it being a "limited edition." And I wonder what the price will be.

I keep wondering if Opips3 is some sort of bot that strings together random English words. Oh Opips3, never change ...

First-ever opera release on ULTRA HD Blu-ray TM
• The new 4k standard offers a four times higher resolution compared to the former Full HD picture which allows viewers a deeper immersion into the performance. The new 4k standard for Ultra Blu-ray has a resolution of 3840 x 2160 pixels in the so-called “50p” mode (50 pictures per second), resulting in much higher image definition and smoothness
• 96KHz/24bit High-Res Audio
• Compatible with 4k capable Blu-ray players
• Including Digital Opera Guide
• In the hands of Sven-Eric Bechtolf, this final production in the Salzburg Festival’s Mozart / Da Ponte trilogy is a unique evening of inspiring opera
• The stage design, spread over two levels showing up to five rooms at the same time, ensures fast-paced, parallel and multi-layered staging
• Conductor Dan Ettinger’s extraordinary musical sensitivity is truly noteworthy – “…the Vienna Philharmonic committed themselves with refined tonal brilliance and striking phrasing”. (Der Standard)
• The soloists are a delight – “the sweet-voiced, appealing soprano Martina Janková”, “the alluring soprano Annett Fritsch” and “the charismatic bass-baritone Luca Pisaroni” (The New York Times)

4k (2160p) ULTRA HD -16:9
PCM Stereo & DTS-HD Master Audio in High-Res Audio 24bit/96kHz
Region code: A,B,C (region-free, worldwide playback)
Running time: 190 mins
Language: Italian
Subtitles: English, German, French, Italian, Spanish, Japanese, Korean
Production year: 2015
Hopefully, that "50p" spec doesn't mean that the video encode is actually 2160/50p, because I don't think North American/Japanese displays are able to show 50Hz video, even at 4K resolution...

I should think it is native 4K. I've seen no evidence to the contrary, and opera discs are generally quite transparent regarding upscaled video. Plus, there would be little reason to bother pressing the disc if the video was a 1080 upscale.

From what I've been reading, I believe that all UHD players and displays have the ability of transmitting and reproducing PAL frame rates of 25 and 50, so they no longer have to convert from PAL to ATSC and in PAL regions vice versa at video post houses.

For UHD Blu-ray to truly be region free, you would think that would be the case.

Question

I was wondering if anyone has seen this title, as I didn't want to buy it without having read any reviews.

Although the economics are different (if the opera is already being staged, my understanding is that it is not uber expensive to go ahead and shoot it), it's remarkable to me how many opera BDs Arte, EuroArts and other boutique (European) labels have released. And now we're already getting a UHD BD from Euro. I find it hard to believe that this will sell more copies (or even generate more revenue despite a higher price) than, say, Hell Or High Water on UHD BD (which Lionsgate has apparently decided not to release on the new format).

It is 4K/50p.

I have a Samsung KS8000 and Philips UHD disc player. I can hear the sound and see the menus and subtitles, but no picture. I tried changing all sorts of settings on both the player and the TV and could not get it to work. I have 30+ UHD blu-rays and haven't had any playback issues before. They are all 4K/24p, though.

Has anyone been able to play this on a North American setup?

I can confirm that this works just fine on my Oppo 203, but the company clearly states in promotional materials that it supports a number of different formats (4K@60p, 4K@50p, 4K@30p, and 4K@24p). My player's disc information brings up "PAL" when I call up the stats.

I'm not an opera connoisseur, but (1) I enjoy Mozart's music, and (2) I try to support the 4K industry whenever my wallet allows. Amazon currently has this on sale and I believe that this is the first 4K opera offered on UHD, so it wasn't much of a push to get me to purchase it.

The 4K video is, not surprisingly, sharp in the extreme. It was obviously filmed digitally, and has that crispness attributed to video productions. I find the orchestra to be ill served (dynamic punches seem to be few and far between), but perhaps that's to showcase the vocalists. Their singing is clear and easily understood (well, for those who speak Italian). There are a number of language options for the subtitles, and even an "opera guide," though I must say I haven't checked that feature out yet.

Again, I'm not an opera expert, but wanted to chime in after reading about the display difficulties night_demon had.

Got this delivered yesterday... OUTSTANDING. Not a huge opera fan but as far as eye candy, phenominal. Sound is 5.0 (not much LFE in opera anyway) and disc is region free. Expensive as hell but I use it as a demo' and it was worth it.
