Does anyone know if this was shot on film or tape? I can't imagine it's not tape but I did just finish watching it and I swear I saw a little film grain in a few of the darker shots.
I'd also ask the same question about the concerts from Live Shit: Binge and Purge as well although I figure the same thing in that they were likely shot on tape as well. |

Not too happy about a 3D release, but just to make sure I understand something about 3D. Do I understand correctly that if you buy a BD3D disc and try to play it on a 2D display, the disc will play simply play it in 2D? I'll buy the new disc day one if it comes with a standard 2D copy as well but if not, I'd like to at least know that while I can't experience it in 3D, nor do I care to, but I can still at least watch it.

Its supposed to be screened in theaters in 3D. But seeing Metallica has a huge commercial market I don't think they'll limit it to 3D releases on home video. I'm sure a 2d blu-ray/DVD release is expected. I loved the set list used for it though:
1. Creeping Death 2. For Whom the Bell Tolls 3. Fuel 4. Ride the Lightning 5. One 6. Cyanide 7. The Memory Remains 8. Wherever I May Roam 9. Sad But True 10. Welcome Home (Sanitarium) 11. ...And Justice for All 12. Fade to Black 13. Master of Puppets 14. Battery 15. Nothing Else Matters 16. Enter Sandman 17. Hit the Lights 18. Seek & Destroy ![]() |

As great as that was... personally, anything less than all 4 nights in their entirety is not going to cut it. I was @ Night's 3 and 4... and they were beyond epic.

I hope this happens, as well as S&M, and Live Shit: Binge & Purge. Having a nice HD touch up, and the full (hopefully) uncompressed audio tracks... it'd be a nice addition to my Metallica Blu-ray collection. But, don't hold your breath for an announcement anytime... ever.

That list is missing my favorite Metallica song, The Unforgiven. That is the reason why I bought The Black Album. The Unforgiven was so popular that they wrote 2 more Unforgiven songs. Although they don't sound as good as the first one.

The Unforgiven III is not bad. Really like it actually.

I just listened to Unforgiven 2 & 3 on YouTube. It is alright but neither sounds better than the first one. My top 3 songs from The Black Album are:
1- The Unforgiven 2- Wherever I May Roam 3- Nothing Else Matters |

Sorry to resurrect an old thread, and not usre if any of the original interested would even see this, but my 2 cents:
I'm afraid that nothing Metallica was ever shot on film, apart from some video-clips probably, and stills of course. Even anything in the HD-era was probably all digital. But more specifically I think anything by Wayne Isham, which would be 'Cunning Stunts', 'S&M', and a few other things, were probably all on tape. He was even shooting the "live" performance of 'St. Anger' (in the studio) on tape, as far as I know, and that was 2004 I believe. (I think the guy cares more about coverage with a lot of angles and a very flashy style over the image quality.) It certainly all has that character, unless it's just the heavy SD-compression that's fooling me. But as much as I personally wish it was all on film, I'm afraid it's not. Seriously, I think concerts like 'S&M' are beautifully shot and it just deserves the highest quality (and preferrably a wider aspect-ratio), but I have my doubts. I think that the way it went back in those days, ever since tape was the most common/convenient format for TV and such, people would go "Should we tape this (event)?" - "Yea, let's tape this.", and it would likely turn out to be literally put to tape. Especially with guys like Wayne Isham, probably. Because had it been someone like Anton Corbijn, who has photographed Metallica since the mid-'90s, who is arguable more artistic, I think he'd have insisted on film. - And also, in terms of budget there was no excuse to NOT put anything to film considering Metallica became a million dollar business ever since their self-titled release. - They could've stocked up on film to record their success. But they didn't even though they had their own jets, and today they have their own Vinyl-plant... But, I could be all wrong about the technicalities. That's just my rant. Just one more thing; I think most visual recordings for music have gotten the short end of the stick anyway, especially in Rock and Metal. There might be some film-releases, such as bands like Dire Straits, Queen, and AC/DC. But a lot of bands like Iron Maiden and Metallica and such have all been "taped". And the introduction of digital HD didn't improve all that much, because most video-releases in HD have that mediocre 1080i TV-broadcast look, over which I'd prefer the tape-look to be perfectly honest. Music gets shafted in every which way... Even audio-wise... Last edited by Damage Inc.; 02-26-2018 at 05:58 AM. |

The music videos, the Live Shit concerts and Cunning Stunts were all clearly shot on film. They have that 24fps film frame rate.
S&M, however, was totally shot on tape. |

I will say one thing, and that's that it seems the film is probably not very high quality. Perhaps they've used 16mm?... Or perhaps a mix, cause there are so many cameras. - That's not a bad thing, it gives a raw look to it, but even looking through the compression it seems it might not have been the fanciest type of film. Sad and stupid if 'S&M' is on tape... ![]() Gonna sing-a-long 'Hero of the Day' now... Last edited by Damage Inc.; 03-02-2018 at 12:37 PM. |
