Somehow I have to feel or get excited for this but I find myself really sad because the chance of them putting out the rest of the Eustache they are sitting on is almost nonexistent now. This doesn’t bode well for Jacques Rozier.

Don't know what to say really. Criterion's SDR releases used to be in the minority, but just this last couple of months we've had 8 1/2, Scarface, Seven Samurai (saved by the BFI, praise be) and now Yojimbo, Sanjuro, Winchester '73 and La maman et la putain all without an HDR grade.

If no-one offers an alternative for La maman et la putain then I will buy this. It's one of the greatest films of all time and not hard to improve on an Artificial Eye VHS from the 90s! Hoping and praying however that BFI or another UK label can step in with an HDR pass - alongside an English-friendly release of Mes petites amoureuses, Le cochon and the rest.

If the restoration didn't have an HDR pass, then the 4K won't have one either. Criterion really aren't in the business of adding their own to a restoration already completed by others.

Janus bought these titles in the UK as well, so should be releasing from Criterion over there as well.

Yes yes. See the BFI's Seven Samurai + Seventh Seal and the upcoming Arrow Dollars Trilogy for how things should be done (I can still recall the 50+ pages of apologia for Kino's release of The Good, the Bad & the Ugly, how this was the best possible release given the master available, how a rescan or full regrade would be unaffordable, how the film didn't need HDR anyway, how it's never going to look any better and everyone should buy it, etc - it's going to be delicious when the Arrow drops).

For anyone wishing to get a definitive version of all the Eustache films in a box set, Carlotta released a magnificent one this year. Encoding is by Fidelity in Motion and the discs look all obviously splendid. No English subs are included but you can find files online. I think this is our only chance at getting these films in a physical set for the time being, sadly.

Mmm, not everyone has the desire to start ripping discs and re-authoriing with fan subs... Also, the Carlotta isn't even 4K.

I'd call that more of an announcement than a rumour on the announcement/rumour scale.

Is there any reason the word Wh*re needs to be censored on here? It seems very petty when it’s in the title of an important film such as this one.

Are you aware of a better alternative right now?

What?! Am I dreaming? You bought a SDR release? So after Monday’s The Searchers miracle, yesterday’s The Third Man audio miracle, today you blessed us with another one.

Well... It's La maman et la putain at the end of the day. And as far as a version with English subs, I'm guessing this is as good as we're going to get for some years.

Sadly, the HDR/SDR conundrum seems to be going the way of Betamax. No-one can sensibly argue that HDR isn't preferable, but not enough consumers seem to care for independent rights holders and labels to go the extra mile a lot of the time.

I’ve passed on a lot of 4k discs because of no HDR. I can’t afford to upgrade everything, and so it makes it an easy pass. This is a tough one though. Such a rare film.
