Criterion The Virgin Suicides 4K UHD (1999)

The Virgin Suicides 4K Blu-ray

With this debut feature, Sofia Coppola announced her singular vision, exploring the aesthetics of femininity while illuminating the interior lives of young women. An adaptation of Jeffrey Eugenides’s highly acclaimed first novel, The Virgin Suicides conjures the ineffable melancholy of teenage longing and ennui in its story of the suicides of the five Lisbon sisters, stifled by the rules of their overprotective religious parents—as told through the collective memory of a group of men who were boys at the time and still yearn to understand what happened. Evoking its 1970s suburban setting through ethereal cinematography by Ed Lachman and an atmospheric score by Air, and featuring a magnetic performance by Kirsten Dunst, the film secured a place for its director in the landscape of American independent cinema and has become a coming-of-age touchstone.

Got the Criterion Blu-ray not too long ago. It's a great movie which ranks just behind Lost in Translation for me.

I find this odd since Criterion and Paramount parted ways, maybe they made a new deal.

well i think this confirms they did not actually part ways, they just put a few old titles OOP for their own benefit, and also this is the first boutique to get 4K rights from Paramount, which is huge in of itself

i had heard some speculation that perhaps American Zoetrope had a helping hand, but who knows. I wouldn't rule out it simply being a licensing deal between Paramount and Criterion since there are several titles that Paramount is unlikely to do 4K releases with anyway, so they might as well continue licensing to Criterion.

If this is true, then perhaps Black Sunday (1977) will be released via Criterion this year, as well. I have a feeling Paramount don't necessarily want to release that film themselves anyway due to the subject matter. Off the top of my head, I could also see Marathon Man going to Criterion, too. Both of these are pure speculation, however.

I hope this news about The Virgin Suicides is true, anyway. I've never seen that one before.

They only let some of their titles license lapse without option for renewal. Virgin Suicides wasn't one of them. The unprecedented part here is not only the license staying, it's now 4k which to my knowledge Paramount hasn't ever licensed before.

It shouldn’t be seen as precedent-setting. It’s a Zoetrope co-production, the Coppolas probably made it happen.

Well it very well could be a one time thing and what I've erred on anyway, but it's still the first Paramount 4k license which is what my comment was about.

There was “The Running Man” from Capelight. I don’t know the circumstance was for that to happen but it could be possible that Paramount are open to licensing the same group of Republic/Taft/non-mainline titles that labels like Olive and Kino released (“Cujo”, “High Noon”, “Johnny Guitar”, “The Quiet Man” etc) for UHD licensing. The issue is, however, most of those titles either don’t have 4K scans and/or have HDR masters like “The Running Man”.

Guess I’ll be unloading my Criterion Blu for this one. I love this movie too much not to upgrade.

Ahh I wasn't aware of that one. I stand corrected.

I stan a supportive father. Here's hoping they release her other stuff in 4K through the collection.

I wish they did Lick the Star in 4K too as a bonus feature. Such a great short film!
