On the one hand, I'm thrilled that Scream Factory is expanding its steelbook line.
I'm a little disappointed, though, that this appears to be just the first film. You'd still need to buy the "Excellent Collection" set to get "Bogus Journey". I guess a Steelbook for that one could hit down the road, but I honestly prefer the cover art for the old Zavvi version. I'm definitely in for "Buckaroo Banzai," though, even though I just received the non-steelbook as a Christmas present. |

You need to understand how the business side of this works. That's pretty common with these Shout! releases, and there is reason for it.
They are licensing the movies from the studios specifically to make these collector's edition physical releases that we wouldn't otherwise get (in some cases with them being the only releases of those movies available on Blu-Ray at all... i.e. Bogus Journey). In most instances, the studios are only licensing them the rights to for a physical disc release, and not any form of digitally distributed version. And that is most likely because the studio is still otherwise directly distributing the digital versions, so they aren't going to license those rights out. That's generally the case with most movies/content that is licensed out from the studio that owns it to another company that makes and distributes the discs. It's not exclusive to Shout Factory. This is also usually the case for releases from Mill Creek, Twilight Time, etc. Shout may make a more premium product with a lot of extras, while a company like Mill Creek focuses on bare-bones budget releases, but this aspect of the dealing making usually remains the same. There are occasional exceptions, but they are rare. I know Mill Creek will soon be re-releasing the complete series of The Kids in the Hall, which will include digital copies of the episodes. That, however, is the exception and not the rule with releases such as this. With physical media gradually becoming more niche, especially when it comes to catalog titles, we are honestly lucky to even be getting the kind of releases that Shout Factory makes, regardless of whether or not they include any digital copy. |

It's not better than the previous steelbook release in terms of cover art (IMO), doesn't offer any further extras or include bogus journey.
Why bother? |
