Criterion The Lost Honor of Katharina Blum (1975)

Quote:
When a young woman spends the night with an alleged terrorist, her quiet, ordered life falls into ruins. The Lost Honor of Katharina Blum portrays an anxious era in West Germany amid a crumbling postwar political consensus. Katharina, though apparently innocent, suddenly becomes a suspect, falling prey to a vicious smear campaign by the police and a ruthless tabloid journalist that tests the limits of her dignity and her sanity. Crafting one of the most accessible and direct works of 1970s political filmmaking, Volker Schlöndorff and Margarethe von Trotta deliver a powerful adaptation of Heinrich Böll’s novel, a stinging commentary on state power, individual freedom, and media manipulation that is as relevant today as when it was released.
Quote:

I've been interested in seeing this one since I saw a trailer for it from the StudioCanal-remastered "Paris, Texas" release.

This is a pretty good movie... I'm surprised there aren't more comments about it here.

It's a very good movie. I have the Optimum blu, which I should watch again one of these days. I think it's been maybe 2 years since I last watched it.

Given the caps, the Criterion looks like the same dated master as the UK release, yeah. The 2019 German release looks different and better. That's strange...

Yeah, that's clearly NOT the 4k restoration.... and the usual reviewer on this site didn't even notice, of course. Not fair of Criterion fellas anyway; maybe an error, but it's unlikely.

^^ This is why I don't usually trust reviews of the site. There are so many completely out of whack reviews here.

I'm starting to think StudioCanal are intentionally screwing with Criterion. This is the 2nd recent example where Criterion advertised or informed people that they had a newer scan, only to have a dated one. The other example being Pierre le Fou. Kino also was informed of having a newer restoration for Kind Hearts and Coronets, but were given the older one by SC. Clearly a pattern here..

The colours at least seem different/better?

Yup it's clearly the older 2010 StudioCanal master seen on the UK and original German Blus. The old SC transfer was supposedly 4k but done on older tech and it's possible the German Director and Producer preferred and approved that one over the new 4k master for some reason, which could explain Criterions odd description.

The new 4k master seen on the SE German Blu was also reportedly done in HDR, but it's possible the German producers didn't approve it for some reason.

For those who've seen the film before: the white line- is that a cigarette or a scratch?

It's a pen. That guy is holding a pen in that scene. Now I see it is missing on the new German release... What a mess

Wow. I was seriously hoping it was a scratch left there by mistake, and not actual detail removed...

*Gets Shout Factory "The Thing" flashbacks*

Well, that could be one of the reasons why the director decided not to approve the 4k transfer and have StudioCanal supply Criterion the old 4k master.
