Just watched the premiere double episode. I never read the books so I went into this completely blind with no expectations, and curiousity over the fact that it's on MTV of all channels.
Simply put, one of the most surprisingly good shows I've seen in quite some time. Shockingly good really. The production value is very high for a cable TV show. The cinematography is excellent. Some of the dialog is clunky and there is a slight teen angsty feel every so often, but the story feels epic and the pace is pretty strong. I'm all in for the 10 episode run and can't wait to see how this pays out. |

Wife and I had no idea this was coming, but we saw an ad in a pre show at the theater and she shook my arm saying "We need to see this!!" (she is a huge LOTR fan). ![]() |

Interesting news re: this show. Still haven't seen it yet, but I read a couple of the Shannara books back in the '90's - however,it's been so long I don't remember much about them.
That being said, one of the things that I do remember about the series was that there were strong indications that it took place in the future, after some kind of post-apocalyptic event - this was implied by some kind of robotic creature one of the characters fought/discovered in the first book, Sword of Shannara. This is despite the fact that the setting was fantasy/sword and sorcery - at least on the surface. Obviously this is being carried over into the TV series - very cool. |

I watched this right after I watched this week's Expanse. It started out great, and I thought the first half hour or so was really good (aside from the male chosen elves who all seemed to be vacant male model types).
It dipped a little after that - not a fan at all of the Rover girl (and I wanted to since I liked that actress in Pan's Labyrinth), and her dialogue all seems to be as clunky as possible. I will keep watching it, it has potential, but it didn't grab me immediately like The Expanse or something like The 100 did. |

I watched the first three episodes last night, and while it's obviously geared towards today's younger crowd the changes are well done! With the original book trilogy(Sword/Elfstones/Wishsong) among my most favorite I'm beyond thrilled to see this on TV. I wonder if the ratings do well, if we will get prequel flashbacks(Sword) and then S2 would be Wishsong? |

Yes - Thundarr was an amazing cartoon; I'm an '80's kid, so I have fond memories of watching this back in the day. Which reminds me - I still need to buy the 4-DVD set.
However, Shannara actually pre-dated Thundarr. Sword of Shannara (the first book) was published in 1977 - this book did make it obvious that it took place in the future of Earth, after some cataclysmic event. And, the first Thundarr cartoon episode came out in 1980.... |

We're half way through the premiere and it seems alright so far. I felt better seeing that the book series started in 1977 because it seems like very conventional, paint-by-numbers fantasy so far, maybe other than the ruins of human civilization.
The thing that's driving me a little nuts is the music. There's that rising DUNNA-dunna-DUNNA-dunna repeated theme that you hear at the climax of most teen-oriented movies these days and it feels like they play that in just about every scene so far, even when it's just characters chatting. It's like they're yelling EVERYTHING IS MOMENTOUS! It's pretty annoying. That aside, it's well done in many respects. The production values are great, the actors were well selected and most of them will have their characters dialed in soon. I like all of the protagonists so far and the demons are pretty intriguing, too. I'll keep watching. |
