Whether it be through a fire, theft, or the moving company lost them along the way, they're all gone. What's next?
Do you rebuy all of the discs? Go digital? File an insurance claim, pocket the money instead of rebuying, and move on? |

File insurance claim, re-buy most of the classics at a much lower price and save more money in the long run. Don't re-buy what you won't watch again. Sorry for your loss.

Rebuy the Blu-rays of course. They'll be a few OOP titles I couldn't buy, but I'd get most of my collection a LOT cheaper than I original paid for it. The interesting question is, how many titles would I not bother to rebuy...a fair few.

I'm tempted to say that I would take the insurance payment, keep the money, and enjoy not having the "burden" anymore.
I get a lot of joy from discovering previously-unseen movies and revisiting old favorites, though, so I would probably fall right back into my current purchasing habits. |

I didn't actually lose my collection (knock on wood), but I don't know what I would do if I did. Being at almost 800 movies/TV shows, it's hard to know. I can't even imagine if I had thousands like some people on here.

Great question. In January my son and daughter in law lost everything they owned (including pets) in a fire which completely destroyed their home. They are in the process now of compiling a list of everything for the insurance company. Thankfully some things were in the cloud but most were hard media and simply irreplaceable.

After crying uncontrollably for probably a week to two weeks, I would probably start to re-buy 50% of my collection slowly. The problem is I have a lot of OOP's and stuff that frankly I'm not sure can be easily re-bought. So I try not to think about doomsday scenarios and be as safe as possible.

I'd set up a Go Fund Me page, and create some sob story, and one that will somehow make it seem like one of my amendment rights was totally violated in this tragedy. I will then put the inevitable influx of money towards buying twice as many movies as I had before.
I have it all worked out guys ![]() |

I have most of my physical collection on digital(I actually have more movies in my digital collection) so there would be no need for me to rebuy them digitally. I may rebuy some here and there and upgrade some to 4k but would not rebuy my entire collection. I own some steelbooks that are probably more expensive than what I paid for them originally and some may be harder to find so would probably not rebuy them for these reasons. Physical space could also be a factor too. Most likely I would keep most of the insurance money and just rebuy "my must haves." Hmm now you got me thinking about what my "must haves" are and how many movies in my collection are "must haves."

While it would suck big time to loose my collection, that's what insurance is for. I would probably replace about 2 thirds of my movies, upgrading some to 4k along the way.
Now my CD collection is another story. I have spent years buying up older, OOP CD's which on their own aren't worth a whole lot but finding most of them again would be a serious pain. Some of my SACD and DVD-Audio discs would be difficult and expensive to replace I would be pretty torn-up about losing those. |
