Most UHD Blu-ray players and UHDTVs currently owned by the public
don't support Dolby Vision. Due to the need for DV encoded UHD Blu-ray content to display a reasonably good picture on non-DV equipment, will the benefits of DV be compromised until the majority of consumer players and displays support DV? Kirk Bayne |

I guess I don't really understand your question. Why would Dolby Vision suffer just because someone's equipment doesn't support it? All Dolby Vision-encoded UHD Blu-rays must also have an HDR10 base layer that is compatible with any standard 4K HDR TV. ![]() ![]() |

It's alright, his threads always have some sort of inane question or musing like this. He's like a bot or something. And that's the very last one of these that I will be clicking on.

An additional "trim pass" is done with the colorist and filmmakers to set the look of the SDR (Standard Dynamic Range) version for backwards compatibility. ^^^ If there is no "trim pass" then the DV encoding may be need to be suboptimal in order to provide a good picture on non-DV viewing equipment.
