Default Suboptimal Dolby Vision

Most UHD Blu-ray players and UHDTVs currently owned by the public
don't support Dolby Vision.

Due to the need for DV encoded UHD Blu-ray content to display
a reasonably good picture on non-DV equipment, will the benefits
of DV be compromised until the majority of consumer players and
displays support DV?

Huh? Are you saying that you need Dolby Vision content in order to enjoy "good picture" on a non-Dolby Vision TV? That makes no sense to me. There are tons of HDR10-encoded discs that look stunning on both HDR-only and Dolby Vision-enabled TVs.

I guess I don't really understand your question. Why would Dolby Vision suffer just because someone's equipment doesn't support it? All Dolby Vision-encoded UHD Blu-rays must also have an HDR10 base layer that is compatible with any standard 4K HDR TV.

It's alright, his threads always have some sort of inane question or musing like this. He's like a bot or something. And that's the very last one of these that I will be clicking on.

https://partnerhelp.netflixstudios.c...-Dolby-Vision-

An additional "trim pass" is done with the colorist and filmmakers to set the look of the SDR (Standard Dynamic Range) version for backwards compatibility.

^^^
If there is no "trim pass" then the DV encoding may be need to be suboptimal
in order to provide a good picture on non-DV viewing equipment.
