Default Issue with 4:3 movies and HDMI on 16:9 TVs?

To make this long story short. I got a Toshiba upsampling DVD player. It was on close out for $26 bucks (originally $99). I just could not resist it .

The Upsamling does make a big diffrence, it's sweet It should hold me off a year or so till PS3 becomes readily availible ( like how Xbox 360 is now).

However I have a minor issue. I got a lot of anime, and majority of them are 4:3 or standard aspect ratio. Well My HDTV does not have HDMI, but a DVI port, thus I am using a HDMI to DVI converter. Since my HDTV expects to be used as a monitor on DVI there is no way I can watch the show in it's 4:3 aspect ratio. Obviously the show will look flat if i watch it in 16:9. My TV's zoom feature can cut of the top and bottom of the show to have the corect aspect ratio (It will not look flat but the top an bottom get cropped a bit ). This is fine, however If i chose to watch an 4:3 anime in Japanese, I would not beable to read the subtitles. (Japanese language is best way to watch an anime the way the director invisioned it. ).

I was wondering if TV's with HDMI have the ability to watch 4:3 videos by adding borders to the sides, like mine does it does with it's analog ports. I was hoping that DVD player had that ability but it does not.

My solution to that problem would to conect my component cables to it as well. If i watch in Japanese I have to watch in 480p via component. HD upsampling is only availible on HDMI unfortunately.
