I wonder if they have the rights to release this on BD in the US as well.

Rights seem like it would be a nightmare to obtain due to the music but somehow UK label Second Sight were able to score the license and release a nice BD set years ago, which I own. It's one of my most prized possessions. I'll happily double dip if Shout releases a 4K

Wikipedia lists the running time as 112 minutes in theaters and 92 minutes on video. (The latter is most likely the same 90-something minute cut on my old MGM tape.) What’s the story with that? No amount of googling has been able to explain those numbers, and the two BBFC links just give me 404s.

I don’t know what the laws are like over there, but they’re presumably different. Also, at least two of the big acts in Electric Dreams - Giorgio Moroder and Boy George - are from that side of the pond, and the movie is also technically a British production that got released in America. All that might contribute to some issues obtaining the movie rights and music rights. Aside from a few stealth runs on VHS in the late 80s-early 00s (my tape is dated April 7, 2000), the movie has effectively been out of US circulation since 1986ish, although various releases of the song “Love Is Love” on both solo Boy George albums and Culture Club albums mention that it’s from this movie. So apparently the song “Love Is Love” and the title Electric Dreams are not entangled in legal BS, but everything else is. Has the movie been out in the UK between the 80s and the Second Sight release?

Virgin Video released it on VHS in the UK in ‘87. Second Sight released it on DVD in 2009, and then later the blu-ray in 2017.

Although the blu-ray included newly-recorded video extras, interestingly it dropped the titular music video, which had been included on the previous DVD release.

Park Circus says that MGM have the right worldwide, which makes sense because that’s where the Virgin Video library ended up. That being the case, it’s likely now going to be hidden in the Amazon Vault for the foreseeable….

Can anyone account for the discrepancy between the two runtimes on Wikipedia?

This is on my wish list as well. How have we not had a US release????

It would be really odd if I were to break down and get a Region-Free player... for ELECTRIC DREAMS.

Not that crazy. My UK Blu-ray/DVD list is Shock Treatment, Alfredo Garcia, this, Flight Of The Navigator, some other Arrows, some other SS, several copies of Metropolis, and the DVDs of Song Of The South and The Devils.

So going region free will really open the door for future purchases, but initially it will be maybe 20 foreign discs.

Started buying foreign releases before I had any way of playing them, even before the jump was made to 4K format.

Once I went 4K, first purchase was a region free 4k player.

All of my international Blu-rays that were locked, I used different versions of software that allowed me to set the regions on my computer, and simply brought my tower downstairs if I wanted to watch that disk.

Was a huge PITA, glad I no longer need to do that...

This has an Italian Blu Ray media book and it looks so nice might pick it up at some point. I hope it gets released on Blu Ray in the US at some point but a nice Italian Blu Ray is pretty good too.
