The rtings.com review for the brand new Samsung Q9FN just came in. It looks like we have a new flagship in the LCD marketspace. But the 65" set is selling for a whopping $3799 and since it's a Samsung, it doesn't do Dolby Vision. However, it is now the best available gaming television with good input lag and excellent brightness.

Had a acquaintance get a Samsung 65Q8FN (just below the Q9FN) he had it for a few days, but he thought the interface had too many bugs and was difficult to get a good HDR presentation from it. More or less very good panel, just hated the Tizen interface Samsung has provided for setup.
He returned it of a LG 65C8 which is DV compatible. |

I am most interested in hearing what Samsung plans to do in the future with their firmware updates regarding DV, HDR10+, or any sort of dynamic metadata standards. They seem to be all quiet on this front and leaving things very opened-ended for now, having taken down the HDR10+ branding and marketing from all of their 2017 and earlier product pages and item descriptions. Mum's the word.
It sure doesn't seem like we're going to see much Dolby Vision branding on anything Sony or Samsung until close to 2020. I would assume that these new 2018 Samsung TVs could be retrofitted for either format. |

I do not expect Samsung to adopt Dolby Vision HDR. They put a lot of R&D into developing of a competitive HDR format that like DV sends metadata back to the TV with the frame-by-frame peak luminance so the TV can tonemap properly.
Of course, Samsung's HDR10+ capable TVs can only decode HDR10+ with content that is created in HDR10+. So if it sees a DV signal it will convert the DV HDR to the SMPTE base standard HDR10 and not look up the frame-by-frame peak luminance. |
