I'm an '80's kid & am a big fan of New Order; lesser fan of Joy Division. However, the bands are inextricably connected, so there's no way you can discuss one without at least mentioning the other.
That being said, while I find Joy Division's sound somewhat dismal & dark (which I know was intentional), New Order's music is, overall, fresh & hopeful; they're my all-time favorite rock/pop band. I also consider NO to be one of the (if not the) early fore-runners of techno music. Just my opinion, however. Re: NO, I have too many favorite songs - but, among them are: Bizarre Love Triangle extended version - this is possibly my favorite rock/pop song of all time. This song truly moves me, even 30+ years after first hearing this. Temptation - my second favorite NO song. Really liked the way this song was used in one of my favorite films, Trainspotting. Superb! True Faith Ceremony - amazing sound. Round and Round Regret Shellshock Confusion Fine Time State of the Nation Dreams Never End Vanishing Point Love Vigilantes Brutal (from The Beach soundtrack - 2000) - great song, which I think was originally supposed to be a JD song?! Crystal (2001) - Excellent sound, and brings to mind their '80's music, while still being "fresh". Slow Jam Thieves Like Us And many others... To all NO fans, I would also recommend the boxed set Retro (2003) - if you can get this for a good price. This got mixed reviews & can be expensive on the secondary market, but I really enjoy this set - I got it for only $30 used several years back - though the box was somewhat worn, the CD's were in perfect shape. Here's one of the better reviews of this set: http://www.popentertainment.com/neworder.htm Also, these two movies are highly recommended to fans of JD, though NO fans will probably like them as well. 24 Hour Party People - great portrait of the music "scene" in Manchester, England back in the late '70's/early '80's. Control - very powerful b&w bio-pic focusing exclusively on Joy Division. Last edited by AnamorphicWidescreen; 11-07-2015 at 01:28 AM. |

To add to my last post, New Order has a new album that was recently released, Music Complete (2015).
And, it's excellent! I think it's their best one of the 21st century, and really brings to mind their '80's songs. I feel like I'm discovering their music for the first time when listening to this. Favorite songs on this album include: Restless, Singularity, Plastic, Tutti Frutti, Academic, and others. Fantastic.... Last edited by AnamorphicWidescreen; 11-06-2015 at 11:03 PM. |

I love Joy Division/New Order, and have been a fan since I discovered them during the late 1980s.
My Top 10 Joy Division songs 1. "Transmission" 2. "Love Will Tear Us Apart" 3. "Autosuggestion" 4. "Dead Souls" 5. "Disorder" 6. "Isolation" 7. "Shadowplay" 8. "A Means to an End" 9. "She's Lost Control" (12" single version) 10. "Digital" My Top 10 New Order songs 1. "Temptation" (original 1982 12" version) 2. "The Perfect Kiss" (12" version) 3. "Ceremony" (September 1981 version) 4. "5 8 6" 5. "Broken Promise" 6. "Blue Monday" (original 12" version) 7. "Run" 8. "Age of Consent" 9. "1963" 10. "Lonesome Tonight" Honorable mention: "Turn the Heater On" (New Order's cover of a Keith Hudson reggae song that they recorded for the BBC John Peel Sessions) Now, if I had to choose between the two, then I'd go with New Order. New Order's material during the 1980s has played a large part in the soundtrack to my life. New Order does not visit Atlanta often, but I finally had the chance to see them a couple of years ago when they swung by here. Peter Hook was no longer part of the lineup by then, but the presence of Gillian Gilbert helps the band more than the absence of Hook hurts it. (This is why I like the new album so much.) New Order's latest album, Music Complete, is my favorite album of 2015 so far, and I cannot stop listening to it. My favorites are "Tutti Fruitti", "Academic", and "Singularity", but the whole album is solid, and there's not a bad track in the bunch. Music Complete is, by far, my favorite New Order release since their 1980s output. The only downside to being a New Order fan is that the process of collecting the best versions/mixes of their songs is somewhat unwieldy, because their many compilations differ so widely in terms of the versions that they use. I've got a couple of 80-minute CD-R mixes of my absolute favorite New Order tracks that I had to compile from several different sources. Last edited by The Great Owl; 11-12-2015 at 05:38 PM. |

Yes, Music Complete is an excellent album - I'm not really into any of newer bands, so it's great that a band that was around when I was a kid is still producing new albums - very nostalgic. I agree that MC reminds me most of their '80's ouput, more than any of their albums in the past 15 years. Also agree that the problem with NO's collections is that they're so haphazard. I have the 2003 boxed set Retro, which is great - but it is somewhat "uneven". I also have the single CD Best of collection from the '90's (with the blue paint/watermark on a white cover), as well as "Substance" (1987 2-CD best of). All of these are nice to have, but it would be even better to have an extremely comprehensive boxed set... |

Massive JD fan but not as much into NO. I do enjoy NO, but only in passing.
Top 10 JD songs...
I consider Ian Curtis' death possibly the biggest tragedy in the history of rock. The stuff he wrote while only in his late teens and early 20's is mind boggling. The world lost a singular talent that doesn't come around but VERY rarely. |

I actually only became aware of both JD & NO at around the same time in the late '80's, when I was in high school. As I said earlier, you can't speak of JD without talking about NO, and vice-versa.
Though I'm more of a NO fan, the superb b&w film Control (2008-ish) focuses completely on JD, and gave me a much greater appreciation of their relatively small body of work (and it was only small because they weren't around for that long). I would also say that Control is quite possibly the best bio-pic. I've seen about a rock group (if you want to consider JD a rock group)..... Yeah, we'll always wonder what would have happened with JD if Ian Curtis had lived; he passed on just before they were going on their first U.S. tour..... |

Has anyone seen 24 Hour Party People? I haven't seen it, but friends are always telling me to rent it because it's about the whole Manchester Scene and Factory Records done as docudrama / comedy. Evidently focuses on Happy Mondays, Joy Division and New Order. Would anyone recommend?

24 Hour Party People is told from the point of view of Factory Records founder Tony Wilson (played by Steve Coogan), and it's, at turns, comedic, tragic, and oddly insightful. Tony Wilson made some crazy business decisions, to say the least, and the movie's most hilarious moment involves an expensive conference room table. |

For what it's worth, the movie is intentionally filmed like a documentary - which truly fit the story & time period. Last edited by AnamorphicWidescreen; 12-11-2015 at 02:50 AM. |

For the past year now SiriusXM's 1st Wave has been my default station. Have discovered so much great 70s and 80s alternative music that I'd never heard before, as a I grew up more into mainstream pop and rock, and I've heard a lot from these two bands. (Didn't even know the connection for a long time.)
Anyway, I can say I'm not really into Joy Division since they're a little more dark and goth than I like, although "Love Will Tear Us Apart" isn't bad. But I've really loved the songs I've heard from New Order. I think my favorite is "Love Vigilantes," which I now have memorized and find myself singing along to every time I hear it. I haven't listened to NO's new album yet, but I did hear the single when they first released it on Facebook and really liked it. |

Fan of both, more so New Order. The amount of money I've spent collecting 12 inch vinyl on these guys was insane back in the day. All the import stuff and what not. I've had the chance to see NO live several times the most recent time being last year in San Francisco. Also saw Hook with his band perform Low Life and Brotherhood back in 2014. Although it was great to see Hook, as a lead singer he's just not that great.
Also saw a rare live performance of Electronic in Los Angeles back in the 90's. Still though NO is still one of my favorites along with The Cure and DM (pre Violator) with Black Celebration being my favorite. |

You gotta give him heaps of credit, however, for playing all these songs that New Odeur ignore, which fans have been wanting to hear for YEARS. All NO have been playing (aside from these new songs) for the past 20 years have been a greatest hits setlist containing the SAME SONGS. Hooky at least is giving you your money's worth. |

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3PZ5...ature=youtu.be (That whole show used to be on YouTube) I've been a fan since hearing Temptation on a local college radio station in 1982, and saw NO live 3 or 4 times. But I also listen to JD a lot, maybe now more than ever. I thought Hooky's book on JD was surprisingly good. Last edited by HanaBi; 04-23-2016 at 06:49 PM. |

I loaned my 12" to a girl I liked in high school. After about a month, I asked if she might want to return it. She said, "But I listen to it every morning--it's the exact amount of time it takes to put on my make up!" I guess I knew then it was not meant to be...

Decided to create this thread to reunite all JD fans and enthusiasts
![]() ![]() Which album, compilation and song are your favorites? Where you think JD would be today, if Ian hadn't killed himself? I bet they would still make a lot of success and would be even bigger than what New Order (which I never heard any song nor had the curiosity) is today. They did release some great material, even though they had so little time. Just wish Ian were still alive, so they would have given us more incredible albums and tours. ![]() |
