![]() ![]() Among Twilight Time's first 2018 offerings is the acclaimed Woody Allen film made during the time in which his partnership with Mia Farrow was moving toward its end. Well shot, cast and acted, with jittery camerawork echoing the often discomforting but bitterly funny interactions of its characters, this has some of the best work of Sydney Pollack and Judy Davis onscreen. Part of the Tri-Star-released duo between the Orion and Miramax strings, he would return next with the more purely humorous Diane Keaton reunion Manhattan Murder Mystery (hopefully in the works for the near future.) |

https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Bulle...Blu-ray/67592/ Great so see "Husbands and Wives" getting a release. Probably Woody's hardest-edged film. I'd love to see somebody pick up "Deconstructing Harry" at some point as the DVD is looking very rough at this point. |

Awesome. I love Gordon Willis and Sven Nykvist, but my favorite cinematographer for Allen is the late Carlo Di Palma. He was great at capturing moody, autumnal light.
More Di Palma-shot Allen in HD is a very good thing. Plus, the film itself is a great, bitter comedy. |

Great movie. Husbands & Wives is one of my top ten favorite Woody Allen films, and that's saying a lot given that I like most of his movie. The cynicism that WA has towards male/female relationships is pervasive, and permeates many/most of his movies - especially his '70's - '90's work. I also really like NYC, and the city may as well be another character in most of his films.
What's especially funny/ironic about this movie is how the Allen/Farrow characters [Show spoiler] I also see this movie as a commentary about how a lot of people out there get too involved with the lives of their friends, to the detriment of their own personal live(s). I've seen this happen IRL. For what it's worth, I would classify my top sixteen (can't pick just ten) WA movies as follows - though not necessarily in this order; he didn't direct all of these, but either acted in and/or directed all of them: Crimes & Misdemeanors - disturbing & brilliant September - very underrated Manhattan - sad story; the b&w cinematography is excellent The Curse of the Jade Scorpian Small Time Crooks - hilarious! Hollywood Ending Husbands & Wives Annie Hall - classic, iconic, and very funny Manhattan Murder Mystery Bullets Over Broadway Zelig Hannah and her Sisters Deconstructing Harry Scenes from A Mall The Front Play it Again, Sam |
