Default Star Wars - Obi-Wan Kenobi Standalone Film

Could Ewan McGregor Be Coming Back to the Star Wars Universe?

Quote:
The gang at Latino Review are at it again. Earlier this week, they started a very interesting conversation with their belief a major Sith Lord would return in J.J. Abrams‘ Star Wars Episode VII. Now they’re reporting that a very famous Jedi will return as well.

Latino Review is reporting Ewan McGregor will return as Obi-Wan Kenobi in Star Wars Episode VII.

According to the story, McGregor will return as a force ghost, which is exactly how Obi-Wan Kenobi was last seen in the original trilogy and how they believe Emperor Palpatine will come back to help motivate a new Sith apprentice. It’s not much of a surprise, frankly, because the appearance of deceased Jedi in this manner is well established in the series.

They’re also reporting McGregor would like to make a Kenobi standalone movie.

We’ve reported in the past that McGregor was definitely open to returning to the Star Wars universe, and that he had an idea for a standalone movie. If, in fact, either or both of these are true now it certainly makes sense. McGregor is a legitimate movie star and his character is one of the few who has been shown to have the ability to use the Force and come back to assist younger Jedi. Plus, young kids are much more familiar with McGregor as the character because of both the prequels and the Clone Wars TV show. (McGregor doesn’t voice that character, but it sounds and looks like him.)

A few additional thoughts. Bringing back McGregor and not the late Alec Guinness is a move dangerously close to George Lucas’ decision to insert Anakin Skywalker into Return of the Jedi when it was released on Blu-ray. He obviously could have chosen to replace Guinness too, but did not. This move also all but assures we’ll see Yoda as a Force Ghost, and maybe even Anakin Skywalker too. Heck – while we’re at it, bring Qui-Gon Jinn back.

There’s no timetable on when or if we’ll find out if this rumor is true or not but, three independent sources reportedly confirmed it to Latino Review so it’s certainly worth thinking about; do so below.

Agreed. I'm all for that happening. Really hope it turns out to be true.

Totally down for an Obi-Wan stand alone film. A Qui-Gon film would be great too

What's with all the force ghosts? A stand alone film of his time on Tattoine would be cool to see though.

No, Slash, it's not "dangerously close" at all. The motives behind it are completely different. That was altering existing and perfectly fine footage to line it up with the current Lucas style rathering than preserving the original work/actor.

If there was a choice between using Guinness and McGregor and then went with McGregor then you'd havea point. But the clue is in your use of the word "late" - one Kenobi actor is dead, one isn't. Guess which one is the natural choice to use?

Sorry but Slash's reporting style of adding in any drama or twist they can find rubs me up the wrong way. Report the story, no need to dress it up to make your writing more procovative.

This is the first standalone film that I am legitimately interested in and excited about.

BUT... I refuse to get excited, as Latino Review has about a 65% BULLSH!T track record.

That still leaves a 35% chance of it happening!

I would very much welcome a standalone Kenobi film set between III and IV. I don't need to know about the early years of Yoda or Han (especially not Han). But that's a gap in the story I think is ripe for exploration without damaging the current canon version of the character.

AGREE 100%!

...and of course I HOPE it happens. I'm just not going to get my hopes up based on a Latino Review story.

Please, please make a stand alone Kenobi film. He's always been my favorite character in the franchise and he deserves a story of his own.

Hell, the tag on my car says "OBI ONE", my dogs name is Kenobi, and my name on this site is ObiWanShinobi...I'm kind of a fan

While I never hated the prequels like many others (I find them enjoyable, but not the same level as the original), but I still think that McGregor made for a good Obi-Wan, and was one of the things that worked well in the prequels. While I don't have any interest in seeing Obi-Wan in Episode 7, and I'm not too crazy about the idea of spin off Star Wars films, I must admit that I'd be much more inclined to see and Obi-Wan adventure with McGregor more so than the rumored Yoda and Bobba-Fet films. I just feel like he would be able to carry the picture much better.

I approve. Would definitely like to see a stand alone film of his time in between episodes 3 and 4.

Absolutely loved Ewan McGregor in the role. The mooted Yoda and Boba Fett films I really have no interest in but I'd really love to see McGregor playing Obi Wan again

As others have said, he was the best thing about the prequels.

Considering Lucasfilm has said we'd have standalone films, and McGregor has been gunning for one for a while now, it actually makes sense. It's the only standalone film I'd honestly be interested it. Except a Boba Fett film by Joe Johnston...

I'm up for an Obi-Wan movie, just as long as Liam Neeson gets to come back as Qui Gon Jinn. Hell whilst we're at it, let's have a Mace Windu movie too!
