Lubitsch in Berlin - Blu-ray Forum

Eureka have a superb collection of Ernst Lubitsch's early films called Lubitsch in Berlin but they are on DVD only so far. Has anyone heard of the same package coming out on BD?

Not going to happen until Murnau Stiftung makes new high-def transfers for these films and I doubt they are high on priority list.

I'm super happy but I bought the DVD because they said a Blu-ray wouldn't happen...

Me too. Haven't even watched it yet...might try sell it, but wouldn't get that much for it now.

I keep wanting to pick up the DVD of Judex (and yes I'm aware there is a Criterion Blu) but know that the minute I do they will announce the re-release on Blu.

Oh but the MoC DVD includes Nuits Rouges as well, so is worth getting just for that if you're already a fan of Franju. Not too bad at current prices either.

I do wonder what other MoC titles will be upgraded now. They've done the box sets so it'll probably just be whatever single titles they still have the rights to and have suitable HD masters - and obviously more likely if they've been restored (e.g. Rocco and His Brothers). I wonder if they could upgrade L'Argent, as I missed out on the DVD which went OOP relatively recently (and is going for silly prices already).

There is still one box set that hasn't been upgraded to BD: The Complete Fritz Lang Mabuse. I'd settle for a standalone release of 1,000 Eyes.

Well I believe there is one box set they haven't scheduled and that would be a scoop and that's the Naruse one. I've heard whispers regarding new masters of Franju materials but I'm unsure who has the UK rights or who will acquire them...

How could I forget about that one ?.. Yeah 1000 Eyes is overdue a blu.

Ah, knew there was another I was forgetting. Yeah, I can definitely see that happening if there's ever a suitable HD master.

Naruse not going to happen any time soon I reckon, unless Eureka suddenly brave up and go for it again. More likely to come from Criterion, BFI or Arrow though as it may be a risky move and those companies can better recoup from slow sales.

Would love Franju upgrades, but I reckon Eureka might let their rights slip on those and again - Criterion, BFI or Arrow would probably upgrade them. Criterion might just release Judex, but Arrow and BFI have released their own Franju titles in recent years (Eyes Without a Face, Spotlight on a Murderer) and may be interested in others if they get the chance (e.g. appearance of new masters).

If BFI want to tackle Judex and other Franju titles especially as new masters are said to be available then I'd be happy , if MOC want to do it I'm equally as happy.
