Or are they gonna make me buy the Severin 4k disc first, as usual…

Different rights to different versions I believe, so Shout could still do one.

This needs to be a deluxe edition. Hardbox, booklet, poster- the works. It’s a big one.

Isn't this part of the batch of Bava movies held by the rights holder that Arrow no longer wanted to work with?

Wonderful news. This and The Whip and the Body are my favorite Bavas (along with the Vourdalak segment from Black Sabath). Hope for a 4K of the latter.

The only thing we know for a fact will 100% be on the disc is the original Italian version. Whether they were able to also get their hands on the English cut is still up in the air. I sure hope so! I'd love for this classic to get a truly definitive edition finally.

Severin's restoration was listed as 85 mins w/ Italian audio.

I wouldn't mind some insight into the backstory. Arrow released a last ditch BD collection before their rights expired years ago, or so the story goes. This is the first I'm hearing of Arrow not wanting to work with them. Shout just released a Blu-ray box set of some of the films but not all. It looks like the rights holders separated format rights? If this is the case, why wouldn't Shout want to do a 4K set? These films are just as popular as all those HK films now flooding the market. The studio is buying up entire catalogs so maybe it's a money thing.

Shout is putting out a 4K of Black Sunday so they're likely doing 4Ks of some of them in the future.

My guess is the Italian version (which Severin is releasing) and the English version (which Shout has) has different licensors. Maybe Shout will do a 4K of it.

I was impressed with Severin's English subtitle translation of Argento's Four Flies on Grey Velvet, far exceeding the quality of foreign labels. I hope they have a repeat performance here.

Wow, this is absolutely huge then. I much prefer the Italian version and it's never been possible to watch it in decent shape before.

I don't know the details either but it was something described by Arrow staff on Twitter/X as "no longer being safe for them to work with them" (not exact words, going off memory). I've since read two theories on the forums, the first that the rights holder were either challenged by another company or person claiming partial ownership, which made it harder for Arrow to safely work with them, and a second that they simply asked for two much money for renewal and did so in a dubious way which chased Arrow away. A few of the Bava's were not from this company such as Blood and Black Lace and Eric the Conqueror, which is why they still held the rights for those. Hope this helps.
